From Airdrops to Bitcoin, Where Did Nigeria’s New Crypto Users Go?

So far, one thing I’ve learned in this space is that the more you learn and expose yourself to new ideas, the more beneficial it will be for you. Because there are countless opportunities in the crypto space , so you have to be prepared In order to grab them.

Many people, including myself, didn't believe in those airdrops at first because of our previous experience with airdrops that usually ended up being a waste of time and data. But those airdrops were initially interesting for the people who participated in them. Eventually, things got ruined when many fake airdrops started using the same approach, only to reward the community with worthless coins and waste people's time, especially with Hamster.

But then, one thing we learned from that experience is that people are naturally attracted to anything that is free and can potentially give them money in return. Many people across the country, including those you would never expect to know anything about cryptocurrency, were drawn to these airdrops because they hoped to make money from them. I doubt that the same number of people would be interested in something like Bitcoin if they were told they had to put in their own money and hold it for at least 4–5 years before seeing any reasonable returns.

That year wasn’t just a year of airdrop. That same was a year of green also , which actually inspired most Dev to launched that year . A lot of folks got onboarded into the crypto space through the idea of making money from Telegram mini-app airdrops. So I’m curious, how many of those people eventually moved into Bitcoin and actually learned about it beyond the price?

notcoin was like one of the very few if at all but like majority of those airdrops were scams and just time wasting, so naturally if you were onboarded with the mindset that this is quick money, to just enter, do one or two tasks then boom you get money that can sustain you, obviously but now your mind wont still be into it, only like a for very few like those with intense curiosity that might still be investing in different opportunities.
I remember all those thier 2024 crypto events and master classes, the way adoption was taught in most of them, i wont lie you, it felt like money in crypto can be made very quick with like frequent display of wealth as to attract people to come and of cause the kind of crowd that would bring alongside what even taught in the classes, like anyone who still invested in Crypto and its opportunities are like people who genuinely just wanted to know more about it and then they did their own research.

Those shitty airdrops only show up during halving because of how market tend to move in the upward direction and they benefit from that.

They don’t when the market is bearish, so expect more by 2027/2028… I’m not sure the ones you’re referring to that made you profits but I’m sure that 90% were dust /eventually became dust and dumped.
 

Even those that started out slightly profitable end up turning to dust soon after, only a few actually succeeded to become worth the time, effort and money of potential holders and traders. The number of scam projects that came out at the time made sure that even the legits one's were treated with doubts as well but that rush also did pull a lot of people towards crypto, without it, maybe we wouldn't have so many young Nigerian dealing in crypto this much.

Now and days project don’t want to make money genuinely they hustle want to milk their community. Like one the other time asking for seed phrase from some community maybe just to claim their drop . Which is crazy , cause how can you ask for something that important. And many will fall for it , due to the fact that they are just in for the money they don’t want to know more about the technology .

I didn't really benefit anything from the airdrops but I had a few of them on my telegram, perhaps I came late, but it is the rush of airdrops that actually made me realize and lean into cryptocurrency investment and of which Bitcoin was my main interest besides Etherum that was really good for NFTs at the time.
So far, even NFTs and airdrops are almost a forgotten story because the real deal now is just DCA strategy of investment with Bitcoin and I say it's safer to be more focused on it than looking for quick profit from the Internet at the detriment of my holdings or portfolio.

As someone said in the comments, the next halving might come with similar airdrops again and am sure a lot of us would jump in but let's try to apply caution and be wary of scammers and scam airdrops that is meant to steal your funds.

Those weren't the years of airdrops, big man. The years of airdrops were from 2013 to 2020.
From what I read online, those years when people would participate in free airdrops, and there were a lot of them at that time.
People don't trust projects to invest into it. In early 2022, many decided to trust projects a little and buy ICOs, IEOs, and pre-sales of tokens.
Telegram mining apps for coins was introduced to replace the previous airdrop system.

Those airdrops you are talking about were mostly dust, only a few of them paid reasonable amounts of money. This is the reason why a lot of Nigerians are no longer interested in farming airdrops, as a matter of fact a lot of people regret the time they spent tapping on their phone and trying to those tasks that took a lot of time and energy.  Bitcoin would always be worth investing money and time into, this is far better than wasting time on airdrops.

Well, the idea of bitcoin was always present when chasing after airdrops. The era of airdrops is gradually fading away and might cause more losses if failure to avoid these tokens, mainly a lot of creators are not ready to give the community profit instead they focus on their selfish desire although not all newly airdrop are same but, the moment such trend starts with airdrop many do learn their lesson and don’t bother looking for a different airdrop, I will not blame anyone for quitting after what happened recently with the telegram airdrop.

Surely 2024-2025 was really an amazing Year for telegram bot mining, I believe there are many mining ongoing probably it has not been launched or listed that's why you don't hear about them anymore. And many people gave up after mining many of them and they didn't benefit from it. The truth is that Most people benefited from the mining while others didn't. You're absolutely right!  The 2024–2025 period was a memorable time for airdrop hunters, especially with the rise of Telegram mini apps. Notcoin helped build trust and gave many people hope that airdrops could be rewarding. Unfortunately, things have changed, and not every project delivers on its promises anymore. Still, I believe airdrops aren't completely over; we just need to be more careful, patient, and selective about the projects we invest our time in. Hopefully, the next big opportunity comes soon

In as much as airdrop is no longer productive or lucrative as it uses to be in the past, but it has really helped a lot of people get into this crypto space fully, because by doing it, you will start gaining knowledge on so many things that you wouldn't know if you were not interested in it, and moving into Bitcoin investment wouldn't be that challenging that much, since you may already have a little knowledge on how cryptos works.

Personally I can confirm that I started from airdrop hunting like bondex, sui and pi especially, but I evolved to Bitcoin investment fully when I knew about this forum, because aside doing airdrop occasionally, I focus more on trading the more, which I still do until date, but airdrop chasing is where my crypto journey started.
