Ledger has just announced it's upcoming hardware wallet/phone (costs 849$) which is planned to launch the Summer of 2027.

The Atom runs on both Android OS and Ledger OS, which sits on its own secure element chip, allowing you to move into a secure environment for tasks like crypto transactions. Two Atom users can also send encrypted messages to one another using regular Android messaging apps, with the messages decrypted within Ledger OS on the recipient’s device. Ledger has designed the device with AI agents in mind, including a partnership with OpenClaw, designed so that agents can handle financial tasks without getting full access to digital wallets, with physical approval required to complete transactions.

A video of the device I found on X: https://x.com/TechloreInc/status/2110702632461558209

The French hardware wallet maker introduced Atom, an $849 device that combines a crypto wallet with everyday apps through a smartphone-like design. Atom separates Android apps from sensitive wallet operations and includes protections Ledger says would block the implants used in the recent Asia incident. It’s also advertised to detect tampering even when switched off.

Despite the above statements, and after the recent events, I don't see people ordering this, definitely not at this cost. Thoughts?

here is how it looks like:

given the recent issues with Ledger devices, paying nearly $900 for the company’s new inventions which might also turn out to be not very reliable is a dubious proposition. it seems to me that this is not the right time for Ledger to introduce new devices, at least not until the problem regarding implants in their hardware wallets has been resolved.

Read through the article on ledger site and what I can say is that with the price itself many will not go near this, there is nothing unique here except the introduction of AI agents and possibility of not needing a watch only wallet somewhere to track your address. This is just a phone without the ability of making calls and sending SMS.

For clarity sake the ledger seed recovery process or pattern is still the same and like before I will warn people to stay away from this.

I just don’t understand is ledger now releasing new ledger wallets yearly now? The recent ledger Nano Gen5 released last here hasn’t even been bought enough now this. Yet leaks and exploits almost everyday

Ledger Wallet Nano that was launched in 2014 was just $36, later more Ledger devices were manufactured and the price was growing. Ledger Stax price was too much, but there is another one coming that is far more than the price of Ledger Stax. Ledger will still launch a hardware wallet that is more than $1000.

It will not be funny if someone bought Ledger wallet through a reseller for $849 and his bitcoin was taken by hackers or bought the wallet through the company and someone is threatening him through calls.

Surely, they are in a hard situation right now.

Thoughts?
People will make some comparisons with smartphones, for example, the iPhone. The price of the device is almost similar to the iPhone, and people could think of just making a cold wallet with an iPhone to store their funds in an air-gapped.

I intend to make a thread about it and see this thread, OMS beat me on it.

Ledger are in a very hard situation, it's right but I believe that this Atom product and Ledger OS were already developed and planned to launch a long time before Ledger recent incident with Crypto Bilis.

Such products are impossible to have their blueprints, developments, tests and launch within several days or weeks.

I have yet checked details about these products (Atom and Ledger OS) but with classic of Ledger, I believe these things are close source that is not too good.
Hardware wallet and a smart phone, that's quite strange idea.

If you have time for reading.

I would rather buy a cheaper android/iphone and use it to store my coin in an airgapped than to buy this at this cost while still taking the risk. I’ll consider my self stupid enough to pay this ridiculous amount for this device.

For a company that had supply chain attack with just a 50 gram device few weeks ago are now coming up with a complete android device that is even much larger and heavier than the former, and also has almost thesame basic use, with even much larger attacks surface. There is definitely no point releasing this.

Their only, unique mention of any thing open source in their White paper is the 'Android Open Source Project'.

I personally do not get why we should be excited about this device.  Even with out all the drama Ledger had in the past couple of years, I do not see how owning and using this as your main device would be a good idea.  What is next, a Ledger car?  My ideal Hardware Wallet is one that is either good looking but will sit in a safe all the time, or a modest looking one that I can carry around with out having every body stare at me and particularly with out having possible thieves target me.

I liked the first sets of Passport designs as they looked like modest Dumb phones which did attract looks, but probably not from people interested to rob you.  And if you ever have to use it, you would only need it for Bitcoin related actions.  With Ledger Atom, every time some body calls you you will have a Hardware Wallet logo showing right next to your head.  When you take a picture as a tourist, you will hold that logo at eye level for every body else to see.  With no mentions of open source hardware or software, even with that Privacy switch in mind it is a definite 'no way' from me.  Particularly at this price point!

It brings me back to the Topic I started a while ago,

This must be the dumbest move I ever saw, and people working in ledger are complete idiots and morons Roll Eyes
In the same time when everyone was shaken with exploits and scams related with their official resellers, they decided to cover everything up... but releasing another crap product!
Nobody needs another android crap device with ledger logo on it, because this will also get exposed, and leak customer information.

This must be the dumbest move I ever saw

The dumber move is what's next: Idiots will buy this thing, and the paid shills on youtube will encourage them to do so. I'm not going to call anybody out by name, but all you have to do is watch hardware wallet reviews - even those by some of the most popular crypto-youtubers - and it becomes glaringly obvious these clowns are gadget guys who barely understand what the devices actually do. That's why they don't understand the risks they encourage people to take with their coins by using shady sh!tty products.

I can buy a good airgapped Foundation Passport hardware wallet with $349 and use the remaining $500 to buy bitcoin or to gamble with a good shit coin that I think its price will increase.

I do not think I need more than such wallet.

More of this kind of unnecessary wallets will be manufactured if people are buying this kind of wallet.

Ledger has just announced it's upcoming hardware wallet/phone (costs 849$) which is planned to launch the Summer of 2027.
And so, the moment has arrived when hardware wallets mutate into smartphones (a hybrid of a smartphone and a HW device).

The Atom runs on both Android OS and Ledger OS,
In other words, these 2 OSs run in parallel and are not interconnected in any way? Put differently, a malicious program in Android OS can't penetrate Ledger OS?

which sits on its own secure element chip, allowing you to move into a secure environment for tasks like crypto transactions.
So, it turns out that Ledger OS acts like a "sandbox" linked to a secure element.

By the way, does this mean Android OS will function like a regular smartphone (with the ability to insert a SIM card and access the internet) along with all the associated vulnerabilities?

Two Atom users can also send encrypted messages to one another using regular Android messaging apps, with the messages decrypted within Ledger OS on the recipient’s device.
And this looks like an attempt to create a separate ecosystem for Ledger.

Ledger has designed the device with AI agents in mind, including a partnership with OpenClaw, designed so that agents can handle financial tasks without getting full access to digital wallets, with physical approval required to complete transactions.
Well, how could we get by without AI these days? Naturally, Ledger is trying to keep up with current trends. Smiley That said, I personally wouldn’t let AI handle financial management - even though confirming a transaction still requires physically pressing a button. Smiley

There’s a lot of information, but it’s unclear how all of this is actually implemented and how it works. Need to wait for further details (and proofs).

Overall, despite the hate (deserved) directed at Ledger by the BTC-community, these folks are trying to advance the industry - pushing it forward rather than letting it stagnate - and are exploring new ways to ensure security. Even if Ledger fails to create the "perfect" HW device, they could at least serve as an example for other manufacturers (who might adopt some of their ideas). Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Ledger was the first to introduce something new - though, admittedly, we still need to figure out how exactly it’s all going to function.

Despite the above statements, and after the recent events, I don't see people ordering this, definitely not at this cost. Thoughts?
I disagree with you. What is considered expensive by you is not necessarily expensive for others. Just look at how the whole world has gone crazy over iPhones (overpriced gadgets) that people buy by the millions, even when the new models aren't significantly better than the old ones.

Therefore, this device will also find its own buyers - especially if the promised reliability (in terms of security features) turns out to be real.

When personal financial assets are at stake, $849 is a small price to pay for secure storage. The incident involving Coldcard will likely only serve as an advertisement for Ledger Atom. However, the question of whether this device can truly protect client's assets remains open; as always, everything will ultimately come down to nothing more than a belief in its security.

here is how it looks like:

The design isn’t all that discrete. The last thing I would want is to advertise to the whole world that I am carrying my life savings around with me. I know there’s people who actually do keep a significant amount of crypto on their phone, but at least it looks like a normal phone and doesn’t have a Ledger logo stamped on the back. Nobody was asking for an impractical and expensive device that puts you in danger of a wrench attack. The timing of the announcement is also tone deaf, like it’s meant to be a distraction from their compromised supply chain. It’s not surprising because they stopped caring about reputation long ago. Historically, they have been the dominant hardware wallet brand and now they just try to squeeze as much value as they possibly can from their name recognition.

Right.

Part of the issue is the logo. I see so many idiots crowing about how ColdCards are discreet, because they look like calculators. Sure, except for the fact that they say COLDCARD. Come on, folks. Everybody has AI in their pocket these days.

A thief asks: "Yo, Google. What's this?"

Google responds: "That's the mark of a mark."

So many people are so stupid. The logo says what it is. And, to any idiot thinking, "Yeah, but who's gonna recognize that logo?" AI will. And everybody now has AI in their pocket, with a camera.

I love Bitcoin, but all crypto logos are awful, and there's a term for people who like them. The term is, "Marks."

Mark my words: If 2024-2028 is the cycle of hardware wallet robberies, 2028-2032 will be the cycle of individual marks getting attacked. Secrecy is your first line of defense against social engineering attacks. Keeping your Bitcoin secret helps you keep it, and keep yourself safe. Crypto logos are not helpful.

That thing isn't discreet. It's dumb... but dummies will buy it.

that’s exactly right. these days showing that you own cryptocurrency is like inviting robbers to come after you. someone carrying such device will immediately attract the attention of criminals and under torture he will give up all his savings. it seems the engineers at Ledger haven’t yet realized that we’re living in a time when you need a device that doesn’t draw unnecessary attention. perhaps Atom poor sales will serve as a hint.

good point about the timing as well. the company hasn’t even resolved the issue of tampered devices, yet they’re already pushing another product.

Sure, they thought you might also want to take selfies for advertising an added camera. Grin

The crux of the biscuit is Wi-Fi. Ledger probably thought the attack surface on their device was too small, so they decided to add both a camera and Wi-Fi to the device they called a hardware wallet but in my view it's something like a toaster-refrigerator, as much as anything.

What a brilliant idea, a smartphone that is also a hardware wallet - at least users won't have to worry about whether there's something in the device that can send data remotely - the only thing missing is that they ship a SIM card with the phone, which a reseller can then replace with a malicious one.

Just when you think they can't do any worse, these geniuses from Ledger always prove otherwise.
