Whenever I see getting up off a chair, they usually do it the wrong way. Some people get up by lifting themselves up with their arms, and that is HORRIBLY WRONG! Some people get up off the chair using two legs, and that is also WRONG! The proper way to get up off a chair is to use 1 LEG ONLY. Do not use two legs. Use 1 leg. And you need to alternate the leg that you use too. So if you use your left leg to get up off the chair one time, the next time, you should get up off the chair using your right leg. The same applies to sitting down. When you want to sit down, use 1 LEG ONLY. Don't use 2 legs when sitting down. The reason for this is that only weak or fat people need to use 2 legs to stand up or sit down. And if you are using just 1 leg with no arms to get up and sit down, you need to focus more on balance. This results in slower and more careful movements.

Be strong. Don't be weak.

Regards,

-Joseph Van Name Ph.D. (in an unrelated area, but at least I know how to get up off a chair properly!)

We have two legs for balance.  If you are able to still balance when lifting that much weight, more power to you!  The proper way to stand (which you touched on) is to lean forward, balance yourself, then stand up with your legs.   Don't use your arms for anything other than balance.  Anything more is just showing off.  Smiley

By that logic, using both legs to climb stairs would also be wrong because you could challenge yourself by doing it on one leg. That's not how movement works. Exercises are designed to challenge particular abilities, while everyday movements are about getting things done safely and efficiently.
