I think there is no limit to learning lessons everyday people get to learn new lessons, unlearn old lessons and relearn, then learn a new lesson. That’s how life in general has been working but in the crypto world we don’t have to learn so many time but at least once and maybe from others stories should be enough and you don’t need to learn it yourself. This hack is a serious case even though the exchange claims they have things put to gather that’s like a whole lot of profit years wiped in few hours and that can cause every single individual a loss in the market.
It is true that people learn something new every day, but if they are in the process of learning, they will eventually lose their wealth. So from the very beginning, they need to be more disciplined and use a good and strong wallet to protect their wealth, but it does not matter which wallet you use, the most important thing is to save the seed phrase of the wallet. If the seed phrase is stored properly and kept safe, then in the end they will be able to keep it for a long time and the chances of it being free from danger will be less. So it is necessary to follow a strategy to keep your wealth safe, and it is necessary to stay away from using exchanges.

Loss of wealth is usually common to people who do not know how to protect their private keys throughout their investment experience. The first thing that should be learned by any digital currency investor to avoid hacking attacks is how to recover secret keys offline. Putting investments in any centralized platform makes an investor susceptible to attacks and failure that might affect the continuity of their investments. Private storage using hardware guarantees full safety of funds, since there is no possibility of being affected by outside sources whatsoever. Writing down keys in stainless steel is the surest way to ensure funds can never be affected by any environmental conditions.

We all know that the best way to store our Bitcoin is in a cold storage, but because of some justifiable reasons most investors still store there Bitcoin on exchange wallets, of which can't really blame them because these exchanges are big companies they hire the best business managers, they know the best kind of deals to give out that will make investors use there platform, while the cold wallet is just there sitting pretty waiting for you make the right choice, the exchanges are being advertised everyday on screen, and I think this plays a big roll in people's choices.

They know the risk already, and its like they already accepted the risk, and eventually regret later when the exchange gets hacked.
What I see most of the reason is that they fear on taking full responsibility of their bitcoin. They have fear on having full custody of their coins, and afraid that if they commit a single mistake, they will instantly lose everything they have. When there's no even difference trusting even a popular exchange, because when the system gets hacked, they will lose everything they have saved there. But perhaps some amount will be compensated.
The exchanges also have fears of holding huge amounts of cryptocurrency in their possessions but they won't make it known to you because you will stop losing the trust you have for them as a big or well known exchange. Most of them do not have more security apparatus than the others that has been hacked they have not been targeted by the hackers that's why people think they are very careful but now that binance has been targeted and hacked it will open the eyes of crypto investors not to trust any exchange to hold their coins. A time is coming when investors will not be compensated after a major hack, this is the opportunity for investors to stop depending on others to safeguard their investments, it is your responsibility to hold your funds and secure it better don't let the fear of losing it give you the thought that exchanges are careful more than you they have so many untrusted workers who can be used by hackers to get what they want.

We have seen this before that some popular exchanges have been hacked, but we have not stopped using exchange wallets for long-term holding from that place. Maybe there are some things that investors always ignore the various risks.
Quite the contrary - investors see an advantage in this: shifting the responsibility for safeguarding their crypto assets onto someone else. If crypto assets are stolen from a personal wallet (or access to it is lost), the investor is essentially on their own, with no one to turn to for help. In contrast, exchanges offer customer support and guarantees, as seen in the case of Binance (though not Mt. Gox, which still hasn’t reimbursed its clients: the timelines for the return of funds keep getting pushed back), that losses will be covered. In a sense, modern-day exchanges serve as the digital-asset equivalent of traditional banks. Furthermore, exchanges offer the convenience of allowing users to access their crypto assets from anywhere in the world, without needing to carry around a specific HW-device or a seed-phrase. Personally, I am not a proponent of this method of asset storage - a view I suspect many share, given that it means relinquishing control over one’s own assets, but it must be acknowledged that it does offer certain advantages. Rather than casting judgment, it is better to let each investor decide for themselves what the "best" solution is. Perhaps users give more priority to the conveniences, such as when using exchange wallets, there is usually no need to store the Seed Phrase separately, similarly, there is no risk of losing the Seed Phrase, so maybe they consider exchange wallets safe to store their Bitcoin. Similarly, through exchange wallets, buying and selling can be done very easily and there is no need to transfer Bitcoin using a specific address. Maybe considering this overall issue, investors use such exchange wallets to maintain their investments for the long term despite the risks of using exchange wallets.
To sum it up: convenience. It’s damn convenient (though the price you pay is the loss of control over your own assets: "not your keys - not your coins"). I think we should be extremely careful from now on,
Caution should always be exercised. When it comes to investments and (crypto) assets. because with the amount of money the world's best exchange like Binance lost in a short-term attack, there is no guarantee that our hard-earned Bitcoins will not end up in the hands of hackers in an instant.
And given the hacks involving HW-devices, it now seems there is no longer any guaranteed way to store crypto assets securely. Even though exchange wallets have some advantages, I think we should think long-term and prioritize the security of our investments.
There is no universally safe storage method. Gaining the advantages of a particular method inevitably brings with it associated risks. While the balance between benefits and risks varies from one method to another, it is always present. In other words, risks will always exist - only their nature will change depending on the storage method used.

If you have a long-term investment intention, you must use a secure wallet, but a person can keep some money in an exchange wallet if he thinks that he will trade or do some other work with that money. However, what is for investment should always be kept in a separate place and its seed phrases should be saved.

Being an investor or a trader, the first thing you do is buying bitcoin, and storing it before you do anything next. What are purposes and your plans to do next after your purchase will mean nothing if you lose your bitcoin immediately after spending your money to buy bitcoin. Loss can be from scam in your trade that is not completed because you are scammed, or from your bad action after a purchase like moving your bitcoin to an inaccurate address or did not back up wallet and other reasons. We would not want to store our Bitcoins in a place where Bitcoins can be lost. If you have a long-term investment intention, you must use a secure wallet, but a person can keep some money in an exchange wallet if he thinks that he will trade or do some other work with that money.
Investors or traders, exchanges are never safe places for storage, either short term storage and long term storage.

The convenience of storing/holding Bitcoin in an exchange wallet and using an exchange wallet and having real control over Bitcoin isn't the same thing. I think most traders keep assets on exchanges so that they can trade and withdraw quickly without any hassle. The sole purpose of using a decentralized system to a centralized system is to convert assets to fiat money.
Those who plan to accumulate Bitcoin with a long-term investment plan, they probably never consider these important things to be a hassle to keep both their wallet and their seeds.
However, these current accidents/incedence or situations teach us that we should think about how to protect assets safely before accumulating them. Because, now no security system is 100% secure anymore, this incident and the recent Coldcard hardware wallet hacking incident have made crypto users and Bitcoin investors more scared.

If someone that calls himself a hodler sees storing of seed phrase as an inconvenience, it means such person is not concerned about the security of his hodlings, every Bitcoin investor should be very particular about security and privacy, cause these are things that guarantees the safety of our hodlings to a very large extent, i think as Bitcoin investors, there should be any reason for to hodl in an exchange, this has been said severally, and with the recent developments, where many exchanges keep getting hacked, I don't think any hodler should be adviced on the right thing to do, exchanges are not for storing Bitcoin, they have their purses but definitely not for storing Bitcoin.

No one would recommend keeping assets on an exchange. Your estimate might even be wrong. But it might also happen only for a portion of small investors. I feel confident that the funds on the exchange might be a third or even only a quarter of the funds taken from assets stored in personal wallets. But there are also those who always transfer assets out once their trading activity is finished for the day, and the next day they can trade again. Since I got to know trading on exchanges, I would never keep my assets on an exchange.

Whatever the reason is, it's wrong. If you hold your bitcoin on an exchange and it gets hacked, you will have to wait for the trial of the case and hope you get compensated, but the process will likely take years and by that time bitcoin's value might have already increased but in the end you could be compensated based on its fiat value at the time of the hack. So the moment the government steps in, you lose your chance of enjoying the profit, they basically confiscate the profit lol.. so it's not wise to HODL on an exchange given that risk. I get that Binance has recovered because they have extra funds and their SAFU fund, but how can we be sure that next time if something bigger happens they can still cover all the losses? Knowing that exchanges don't have insurance that covers all customer balances, it's quite risky really. For long term HODLing, a hardware wallet is the only thing I would trust.

It a very long legal procedure that is not comfortable with anyone. Let's review how Mt.Gox was hacked, and how their exchange users have to wait for years to receive money back. That case has yet ended and it's like a very good reminder for people who store money on exchanges. They can lose all money immediately when the exchange was hacked, then closed their services, or scam exited, or a long time legal case to finish which is uncertain when will finish and compensation will be distributed to users and victims. If people know it, and they don't want to have headache, with risk of losing all money or waiting hopeless to get compensation, they must store money in non custodial wallets.

In 2026, will people still choose to use an exchange wallet as a place of long-term custody? I really don’t know what some people are thinking or what world they are living in to be making such a decision, although some usually believe that it’s safer for them to keep money in an exchange than for them to hold it in a private wallet, nothing like their wallet being hacked and their money gone, but in reality exchanges can also be bankrupt, and they have more chance of losing that money than anything else.

Most people leave their money on exchange because of the the way exchange make it easier for them to move their money around and even change the moeniinto various other currencies, the ease that comes with that is the main reason why most people leave their money on exchange.
Some others see exchange as a centralised cryptocurrency bank, which give them confidence that even if anything happens to they wallet their money will be safe.

Why are investors more likely to hold Bitcoin in exchange wallets? I think it's because they don't want to take responsibility or because they don't understand the risks that come from not controlling their private keys. In addition, they obviously listen to those who own such CEXs, and some of them claim that sooner or later they will lose their coins if they keep them in non-custodial wallets. Without those who practice this method of storage, most CEXs would have collapsed long ago because they would not have the liquidity to trade. Their owners actually depend on listing shitcoins and promoting their services as some kind of crypto banks.

Investors who tend to keep their Bitcoin in exchange wallets do so simply because it’s convenient. But they don’t realize that convenience doesn’t necessarily come with security. Or even Binance which considered the world’s best exchange was recently hacked. Perhaps investors still feel safe because Binance was able to resolve the issue. And they were able to recover some of the funds that were still in their wallets. But the real problem that could potentially occur is if a massive hack were to drain the exchange’s entire funds then I think that’s when investors would truly feel very afraid because getting their money back quickly would be difficult. So I personally think that investors should realize that keeping money on a centralized exchange is far riskier than storing it privately using a personal wallet by these reasons.

There are reasons why investors leave their Bitcoin on exchanges. Aside from convenience, most investors don't want to shoulder the responsibility for losing their BTC if a hack happens, especially when they are holding a huge amount of Bitcoin. Instead of being personally responsible for their Bitcoin, they tend to let the centralized exchange bear it and rely on the insurance/assurance the exchange offers.
One example is the Binance exchange, the previous and recent hacks shows that the management will take responsibility if the exchange gets hacked like their tagline or slogan, your "fund is safu." This encourages investors to trust their Bitcoin to the exchange wallet. Anyone who has fear of getting their non-custodial wallet hacked will surely use this service. At least if the exchange is hacked, there is someone who can reimburse their funds, unlike when their non-custodial wallet is hacked.
We know keeping our Bitcoin in a centralized exchange is not advisable, especially in the long term, due to the possibility of the exchange becoming insolvent or facing regulatory issues. The funds can be frozen, thus depriving us of access to our Bitcoin. That would be frustrating, especially if we badly needed money.

BTC was designed to eliminate the need to trust financial intermediaries, while we trusted them the most. So by nature, they will be targeted. Wallets like Coldcard have also raised a big question about what to use if not financial intermediaries, but that's a different discussion that started in this board. But we should not voluntarily reintroduce this dependency when we are holding for the long term. For trading, we can prefer centralized exchanges because we have to. Customers' funds will never be risk-free when held in CEXs, but because of Binance, everyone will now think their funds are safer there than anywhere else.

The big case that happened at Binance recently proves that keeping assets on an exchange carries very real risks for all of us even if the exchange is one of the largest and most reputable. But this still doesn’t guarantee that our assets will remain safe. Even though Binance has now announced that they are committed to covering all user losses, this incident still stresses the importance of getting used to keeping assets in a wallet that we fully control ourselves, even if the amount of assets we have is still small. Because this approach is not just about current security, but also to get us used to it so it will be quite safe when our assets grow in the future. Sure, keeping assets on an exchange is convenient for trading and quick transfers, but what's the point of seeking ease if it comes with huge risks? It's better to be a bit complicated but keep our assets safe, especially if our goal is to hold assets long-term. So the priority should still be self custody. The bottom line is don’t sacrifice overall security just for the sake of convenience.

A good investor especially those who make this as a longterm goal will certainly be much more aware of it unless they make this a double standard where there is a chance they will definitely sell and buy again when the price is falling. It certainly cannot be categorized as a long-term investor because basically it only allows for short-term and can even be notarized as a trader even though the account is only limited to spots not to futures.
So in this case we also cannot classify that all those who invest in the long term will store on the exchange because there may be something like this but I actually believe that it is only a small percentage of long-term investors who do it than most investors who are looking for a wallet that is convenient for them to make a place for their bitcoin hodl.
