Howdy!

Today we are proud to announce the launch of CoinGecko.
CoinGecko is a cryptocurrency ranking website that aims to give a 360 degree overview of all the various cryptocurrencies in the market.
We evaluate cryptocurrencies based on our Gecko ranking algorithm that takes into account the following major components to come out with a Complete Metrics Score:

Complete Metrics Score

Market Capitalization
Liquidity
Developers
Community
Public Interest

The following are the full metrics used for each component to evaluate cryptocurrencies:

       Market Capitalization

Price x Total Available Supply
              Liquidity

24 Hour Trading Volume

            Developers Activity

Github Stars
Github Forks
Github Commits
Github Total Issues
Github Closed Issues
Github Unique Contributors
Github Merged Pull Requests
Github Watchers / Subscribers
                       Community Strength

Facebook Likes
Twitter Followers
Reddit Subscribers
Reddit Average Users Online
Reddit Average New Hot Posts Per Hour
Reddit Average New Comments on Hot Posts Per Hour
           Public Interest

Bing Web Results Count
Alexa Official Website Ranking

All cryptocurrencies listed on CoinGecko are evaluated using our Gecko ranking algorithm with a methodology that incorporates all the above key aspects.
Coins are given a Gecko Score that will then be benchmarked and ranked against other cryptocurrencies.

Our aim for CoinGecko is to give a more holistic and quantitative approach in evaluating the potential of a coin.
Each week we will be adding a few new altcoins to our ranking. We currently track 204 cryptocurrencies.
We intend to increase the breadth and depth of this list as we progress.

As we are constantly adding new features, we would like to hear your opinion on ways that we can improve the website.
Do reply to this thread or drop us an email at hello@coingecko.com or a tweet @coingecko with you feedback. We would love to hear from you!
If this sounds interesting to you, do visit us at CoinGecko! Thank you and have a great day! Cheesy

Your friendly gecko developers

Cool!!!  Cool

What other parameters do you intend to add? Total Network hashrate would be an important indicator of the network effect/strength of a coin IMO.

You should consider adding a feature to collect feedback & consolidate and discuss feature additions.

"Community: Looks at discussions and popularity of a coin from social media and forum content (eg. Bitcointalk, Reddit)."

Can you clarify the methodology used for coming up with concrete % - Dogecoin 96/100, Counterparty 40/100? Based on explanation provided so far, it seems like someone is just making those numbers up.

hi bakedrice, we agree network hashrate is a very strong indicator of a coin's worth. that's definitely part of our development plan.
we will be working hard to incorporate the network hashrate in our next iteration.

as for feedback, we value all comments from the community.  currently taking feedback and discussions from this forum thread

wzbysek, we are currently at our first iteration of coingecko.
so our community aspect only measures reddit subscriber count for the time being.
we are going to incorporate facebook and twitter soon but not in this iteration because it is largely correlated with reddit. forums will require more effort and we will incorporate data from there soonish.

as for how we got the numbers, it is actually a % rank over 100. what we did was we took the logarithmic value of the reddit subscriber count of a coin and divide it by the logarithmic count of the largest reddit coin subscriber count. hope this helps answer ur question  Smiley

Good job!
Probably you can add a parameter for 'potential developments' i.e what each coin has in the pipe.

voldermort628 --> that's a brilliant suggestion. thanks! we will be putting it into our to-do feature development Smiley

Looking at it for a while, some charts and graph would be a great addition. Since i am really interested in looking at trends.
yea we are actually working on incorporating some charts and graphs into our site. we initially had google trends chart in our individual coin page but removed it for our beta launch coz we ran into some embedded javascript complications. we are working on fixing it to put it out onto the website soon again!

I think it is just a joke

3     Dogecoin (this copy one, just a suck coin)

14     Nxt (look this one)
qbd1313 --> i know what the guys in Nxt are doing and the philosophy behind Nxt. We are working hard to improve our ranking algorithm. Atm liquidity takes about 1/3 of the ranking algo and Nxt liquidity was low for the day. Also Nxt source code is hosted on bitbucket instead of github like all the other coins. the algo's probably penalising it unfairly. we are working on improving the developer and liquidity metrics. A few days back before launch, Nxt had one of the highest trading liquidity among all altcoins and it was ranking at #3 on CoinGecko.

"What is this??? I don't even"

Hi HCLivess, really sorry if our messaging for CoinGecko is confusing and isn't clear to you. CoinGecko is a cryptocurrency valuation and ranking website. We think that looking at market capitalisation as a sole metric for evaluating a coin does not tell the full picture abt how worthy a coin is. We think that there are several other fundamental metrics that needs to be used in evaluating the quality of a coin.

One of the metric which we think is fundamental is the developer team. The number of developers working on the coin's source code will tell how excited developers are abt the technical quality of a coin. A more active and large developer team will more likely mean that any bugs in the source code will be fixed at a faster rate. Also more interesting features will be implemented for a coin with a strong developer team. More features will increase the utility and use of a coin therefore potentially increasing the long-term value/price of a coin. We are using Github metrics as a proxy to measuring these criteria.

But having developer team as a sole criteria isn't enough. The community also plays a very important role in disseminating the core message of a coin. A strong community is vocal and supportive in PR efforts. It will help the coin get featured in various media publications. Usually people will be attracted to a coin that is interesting and the community support can be approximated by using metrics such as Reddit subscriber and Twitter follower count. In our first beta iteration, we are only using Reddit subscriber count although we plan to incorporate the other measures soon.

We also think that coin liquidity is pretty important in evaluating a coin. A coin without high liquidity could just mean that its price is artificially set high by the few traders trading the coin. This also show that there is not much interest in a coin.

Thus the mission of CoinGecko is to take into account all these metrics to holistically evaluate the quality of a coin. We attempt to do that using our algorithm to come out with a Gecko Score for each coin. We are still new and have started with just 20 coins though we plan to increase it to more coins in the coming weeks.

Does this help answer your question? Do let us know how we can make our messaging clearer. Thanks a lot! Cheesy

@bobster, this is an interesting project.

However, if you want it to be taken seriously you should put a lot of value on judging the technical innovation of each coin as well as inflation/sustainability of each coin.

Without such important factors taken into consideration, results beside the obvious ones like bitcoin, litecoin, etc, seem almost random.

hi xtester, technical innovation is indeed part of our plan. we initially wanted to roll it out in our beta but yanked it out for the time being because it is hard to evaluate technical innovation fairly for each coin because it is somewhat subjective. we are figuring out a way evaluate technical innovation fairly and once we have a method which we are happy we will incorporate it into our ranking.

We plan to add coin supply and inflation in our ranking soon. it's in our to-do so do watch out in the following weeks while we push more updates live.

Thanks for your feedback. Do continue giving us feedback here. Smiley

Hi bobster, you are right that technical innovation is really hard to evaluate objectively and fairly, but that is precisely one of, if not the most important factors which in combination with a strong community and a great dev team would predict or at least be strongly correlated with long term coin success.

For all practical purposes it is almost impossible to predict on a short term basis what a coin will do, but for a long term basis there are few really important things to judge and a lot of secondary ones. As you may know, there's always this power law distribution that seems to govern these kind of situations. So you should try to create create a ranking formula that should emulate reality as close as possible.(There are typically 2-3 factors that are responsible for 80%-90% of the long term outcome and lots of secondary, negligible factors responsible for 10%-20%) Since on the short term this is almost impossible because of the randomness and highly unpredictable events that occur you should focus on long term predictability. This is best done by trying to ignore the noise of the many secondary factors and make sure you don't miss any of the 2-3 very important ones. After you have the important ones and 80%-90% of the long term picture you can slowly add more secondary ones, but that should be the order.

hi xtester, yea i totally agree with you on how coins should be evaluated. the long-term factors play a much stronger role in determining price long-term. it is very hard to give any short-term price predictions coz there's a lot of noise. some of my closest friends use the same philosophy as yours in buying/selling altcoins and that's how we got the idea to build CoinGecko. we will be working hard to incorporate this soon

i guess the next most logical question for me to ask u is how would you best evaluate technical innovation? thanks

Liquidity != Volume.

A market can have high liquidity and low volume; liquidity refers to available funds.

Hi EdwardWitten, thank you for pointing this out. I overlooked this fact. I've read up further on liquidity risk and learned that trading volume is just one way of measuring liquidity for any assets. Will give this further thought and find a better way to measure liquidity on top of our trading volume.

3. We have improved the individual coin page with more information such as hashing algorithm, total supply, introductory video and Twitter feed. Here’s a screenshot of the Litecoin info page:

4. We have also added a coin pricing page with historical 24 hours, 7 days, 14 days pricing data. We also added a currency exchange rate converter on that page so you can convert your coin price into BTC, USD, GBP, EUR etc. Here is a screenshot of the Reddcoin pricing page:

5. We have added a bunch of new metrics on our homepage such as market capitalisation and the constituent metrics of the sectional scores such as Reddit subscribers, Github stars etc. Notice the hashing algorithm under the coin name as well.

We are excited about CoinGecko and the data that we have collected. If you have any feedback, feel free to drop us an email at hello@coingecko.com. We are always excited to get an email from our users! Thanks and have a great day ahead!

Hi guys!

This week we pushed out three new updates to CoinGecko:

1. We added coin hashing algorithm, coin filter by hashing algorithm and network hash rate to CoinGecko.

2. We pushed out Reddit activity measure to count the average number of new post and comments per hour for each coin's subreddit:

3. We added 3 new coins to our list:
- Zetacoin (May 6)
- Communitycoin (May 8 )
- USDe (May 11)

This is an interesting site indeed. I don't like the developer score of Darkcoin though. It is the first fully anonymous coin, and it scored less than Dogecoin in that?  Cheesy

You should prioritize Quality versus Quantity. Many developers are involved in Dogecoin repository because of their community, and that should increase their community score overall.
What Darkcoin offers is way better than 95-99% of the coins on the market in my opinion (mostly because we have over 300 copy/scam coins).

You kind of can't know how many copy/scam coins there are. All you can do is to look at the altcoin section here and watch for new releases.
Well I can give you some advice on improving some scores that need to be adjusted.  Wink

Hi guys,

This week we added the average number of online Reddit subscribers for a coin's subreddit. We added this to prevent coins from manipulating our metrics by buying fake Reddit subscribers. If a coin has a large Reddit subscriber base but very low average number of new posts, comments and online users, there is a high likelihood that these subscribers are fake.

It is just a one-liner on our main page but a lot of thought and effort went into producing this one line with the man icon.

We also added 7 new coins to CoinGecko:
- Hobonickels (May 11)
- Whitecoin (May 14)
- Mazacoin (May 14)
- Gridcoin (May 16)
- Digibyte (May 16)
- Nautiluscoin (May 16)
- Ultracoin (May 17)

This week we also appeared on the front page of the Dogecoin subreddit. Go check out what the shibes have to say about us: http://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoin/comments/25gjat/good_news_shibes_we_just_passed_litecoin_on/

Love the site (and only partly because the coin I work on is currently #2), but noticed something in the dev statistics. Commits for Dogecoin show at 0.0 as average over 4 weeks. We're committing work, so trying to work out if this is because commits via pull request are not counted, or perhaps are you only counting commits to the "master" (whereas we're working in branches)?

Dogecoin Core developer, ex-researcher, trader.

Unless stated otherwise, opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect that of other Dogecoin developers.

Hi guys, here are some updates on what we did:

1. We added 8 new coins to CoinGecko:
    Myriadcoin (May 18 )
    Franko (May 19)
    Libertycoin (May 20)
    Cinni (May 26)
    Monero (May 26)
    Asiacoin (June 1)
    Groestlcoin (June 1)
    Globalboost (June 1)

With the addition of these new coins, we now track 50 coins!

2. We have calculated the estimated hardware cost required to launch a 51% attack on a coin. With this new measure we can see how strong the network protecting a particular coin is.

3. We have added the number of Closed Issues and average number of code commits under the Developer section.

4. The past 2 weeks have also seen CoinGecko featured on several publications such as DC Magnates, Bitcoin Weekly, Altcoins Trader and Altcoin Speculation.

Thank you for the support!

Hi rnicoll, thank you for noticing these points. At the moment we are using the Github API that tracks the "master" branch. We may have stumbled onto a  bug here where the pull request commits are not counted. Thank you for pointing this out. We will be fixing this. Also, you brought up a good point for us to possibly start tracking development in other branches as most work goes on the branches. Thanks!

Hi Bobster,

Nxt has 95% of its activity on nxtforum.org. If you go there, there will be 100-150 people online at any one time (scroll to the very bottom of the frontpage of nxtforum.org to see). It is currently at 134 and it is like this day after day. In the 108 days that the forum has been open, there has been an average of 550 posts per day. Can you reflect this in your stats? We don't really use Reddit so your website isn't capturing the big picture, Nxt has a HUGE community.

The bitcointalk page you have listed isn't our main one. It was the announcement page started by BCNext but we switched to a different one after he went offline as we obviously couldn't edit the OP any longer. This page can be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.0 It is 2672 pages long and is the biggest thread in the alternative crypto subforum. And this isn't reflected on your website either  Grin It was closed when we switched to nxtforum and then we relaunched here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=587007 and the page currently has 213 pages. This is just for promotion though, everything happens on nxtforum and the first thread is the true bitcointalk thread for when Nxt was on bitcointalk.

Can add these bits to give a fuller picture?

Keep up the good work.

Thanks  Grin

Hi Daedelus, sorry for the late reply. I have updated the NXT bitcointalk forum thread to the one you suggested with 2672 pages. It is indeed a VERY huge thread! We hear what you are saying with discussions now taking place in nxtforum.org and no longer on bitcointalk forum. I can see the user numbers and forum posting numbers very high on nxtforum.

Our long term plan is to include the numbers you highlighted but we are finding it hard to go to every single coin forums and getting these numbers. There does not seem to be one standard way to get the numbers from all the coin forums so this is pretty challenging on our side. I have to agree with you though that these numbers are very important and is something that we very much want to track.

Thank you very much for the feedback. Let us know if you have more suggestions Cheesy

I have also compiled a list of Nxt core devs >>>> https://nxtforum.org/general-discussion/list-of-github-bitbucket-contributers-for-nxt/

jean-luc is just one of our core devs. Maybe consider adding a couple others if possible?

wesley for his wallet and jl777 for the Multigateway and NxtServices should be in as a minimum I feel  Grin

vbecas and btc2nxt are the developers for Nxt Automated Transations (trustless transactions, turing complete scripting) that is going through testing as we speak, but I'm not sure they commit any changes they make at the moment

That list you compiled looks good! Currently our algorithm computes only development work done on the core coin protocol on Github/Bitbucket and we have not gone to the developer ecosystem to track how much development is being done by other developers to support the coin. I will take note of this list once we start tracking beyond core source code.

Btw why is NXT source code hosted on Bitbucket? All other coins are on Github - we wrote custom code for Bitbucket to support NXT in CoinGecko! I'm sure if you guys host it on Github you will receive more Stars, Watches etc from the developer community.

Hi guys!

We have been working really hard on CoinGecko the past few weeks that we didn't have much time to tell all you folks here what we have been up to. Here are some things that have been keeping us busy since my last update:

1. We finally got ourselves a gecko mascot and logo! Don't you think the gecko looks really cute?

2. We have launched our price ticker widgets for all cryptocurrencies and currency pairs which we support. Here is an example of Dogecoin-BTC price ticker widget: http://www.coingecko.com/widgets/ticker/dogecoin/btc

If you dig NXT or Reddcoin or Darkcoin or Blackcoin, we have them all! Give it a go and embed the code on your blog to keep your readers updated with the latest coin price!

3. We added a page with the breakdown of all the trading exchanges volume. This is an example for Bitcoin trading exchanges volume: http://www.coingecko.com/coins/bitcoin/trading_exchanges
We also did some under-the-hood improvements to our coin pricing data with this update.

4. We added 24 hours High and Low for our dashboard coins. We also made a slight revamp on our coin info page. Example: Myriadcoin http://www.coingecko.com/coins/myriadcoin

5. We wrote a short guide on Understanding our Developer Metrics to help non-technical people understand what Stars, Commits etc mean. http://blog.coingecko.com/coingecko-developer-metrics/

6. We added more coins of course! We are now up to 63 coins and you can be sure we will be adding more coins each week.

That's it from us this time round. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @coingecko! Say hi to us there. Thank you Smiley

Cheers,
Bobby & TM

Just a single entry to take nxtfroum into account (that doesn't autoupdate) would be fine for now, as Nxt is getting killed in the 'community' stakes (38! WTF! You're making us look bad Cheesy). People are likely to be mislead.

I think it is fair to say we have one of the top 2 most active communities after bitcoin that has endured months (== years in crytpo  Grin) and due to the modular nature of Nxt, we have more active devs than Bitcoin. We should be #1 in the community rankings Cheesy

Thanks  Grin

Final one then I will stop bothering you  Grin

Nxt will perform worse and worse under your measure of liquidity, as you only take into account central exchanges. Nxt is moving towards decentralised exchanges for none fiat trading through its Multigateway, see www.multigateway.com. This trades Nxt/Other coin without the need for Bter, Mintpal etc.

You can contact jl777 on nxtforum if you wish, to discuss how this could be integrated into your stats.

Also, Nxt is not only used to buy other cryptos. You also buy assets, which add to the liquidity as Nxt is changing hands. JLH (jl777hodl) is a Nxt asset that is traded on poloniex and the Asset Exchange usually has 30-60% of the 24hr volume on coinmarketcap.com (You can view the AE volume here >>> http://nxtreporting.com/assetcap.php and I think there are APIs for it if you want to plug it into your volume calcs)

For any help with this, you can contact cc001 at https://nxtforum.org/news-and-announcements/nxtreporting-com-the-nxt-asset-exchange-portfolio-manager/

RE: Nxt github / bitbucket

Github used to be used but we needed to give access to more devs. I think they reviewed the free options (devs didn't want to use credit card) and bitbucket was deemed better for their needs. There was talk of moving back on the forums.

Thanks

Our long term plan is to include the numbers you highlighted but we are finding it hard to go to every single coin forums and getting these numbers. There does not seem to be one standard way to get the numbers from all the coin forums so this is pretty challenging on our side. I have to agree with you though that these numbers are very important and is something that we very much want to track.

Thanks Bobster. Is there anything that can be done as a stop gap in the meantime?

Just a single entry to take nxtfroum into account (that doesn't autoupdate) would be fine for now, as Nxt is getting killed in the 'community' stakes (38! WTF! You're making us look bad Cheesy). People are likely to be mislead.

I think it is fair to say we have one of the top 2 most active communities after bitcoin that has endured months (== years in crytpo  Grin) and due to the modular nature of Nxt, we have more active devs than Bitcoin. We should be #1 in the community rankings Cheesy

Thanks  Grin

Hi Daedelus, thank you for all the information that you provided! Don't look at the absolute number 38 - look at it instead at the relative ranks for NXT in which case NXT is currently ranked #11 overall, #10 for community, #21 for developer and #8 for liquidity. The relative rank is more important than the absolute number that you see.

I'm sorry 38 looks really bad although I have been following NXT for a very long time and I know what you guys are doing. Let me try to explain our current methodology and how NXT can improve.

For community, we only measure Reddit activity, Twitter followers and Facebook Likes at the time being. Reddit activity (Reddit subscribers, new hot posts, comments, online users) is the biggest measure in this sections compared to Facebook and Twitter.  We use Reddit mainly as our Reddit measurements are on a deeper level and is less subject to manipulation compared to Facebook Likes and Twitter followers.

You pointed our very rightly that most of NXT discussions is happening in the forums. We would love to take into account the forum numbers that you provided but unfortunately we cannot just take non-autoupdate numbers for NXT because whatever measure we take must be fair for all coins and our bots+algorithm must work on all forums. Unfortunately that is a huge task for us at the time being. Also, taking non-autoupdate numbers will be a maintenance nightmare for us in the future. Imagine doing that for ALL coins and more!

For development, NXT obviously fares very badly because a lot of things are not being captured via bitbucket. We did our best to integrate bitbucket (NXT is the ONLY coin on bitbucket and we wrote custom code to cater for NXT). However not all info is perfectly available on bitbucket compared to Github. Let me know if you move to Github and I will point our bot to obtain the new info.

As for liquidity, we are only capturing centralised exchanges volume now. Our trading volume data shows that NXT has 143BTC in trading volume now, which is about USD90k and is roughly similar to what coinmarketcap is reporting. We will be keeping a lookout on the development of decentralised exchanges and will see how we can include it in the future - if we implement decentralised exchange volume for NXT, we must also include the other coins' decentralised exchanges as well so we will have to do some research into ALL available decentralised exchanges.

Thank you for your feedback. If you have more questions or feedback, feel free to email me at bobby@coingecko.com

i also want to point out that the most recent developments of Nxt are kept in a private repository accessible only to the core devs. So definitely the figure for developments does look depressing lol

We obviously can't track private repositories though I am looking forward to hearing what is coming up in the following weeks and months from NXT. I'm sure it will be exciting Smiley

Hi guys,

Just a quick update. We have added a bunch of other coins to CoinGecko in recent weeks:

Blucoin (BLU), Bitbar (BTB), Mincoin (MNC), Monacoin (MONA), Stellar (STR), Virtacoin (VTA), Pinkcoin (PC), Saffroncoin (SFR), Librexcoin (LXC), IOCoin (IOC), Qibuck (QBK), Freshcoin (FRSH), Cannabiscoin (CANN), Earthcoin (EAC), Viacoin (VIA), BitcoinDark (BTCD)

We also had an exclusive interview with Cryptocoinsnews:
http://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/news/coingecko-exclusive-interview-bobby-ong-talks-altcoins/2014/08/29

Keep the suggestions coming along. We now have 86 coins on our rank and actively adding more coins. It won't be long before we hit the magic number 100!
We also have 2 new metrics coming up real soon so stay tuned and we have more metrics to help you get a better evaluation of all your cryptocurrencies Cheesy

Thank you for your support. We are truly humbled to have come this far!

Cheers,
Bobby

Suddenly realised, not sure if you pull data from wallet software, but if you do then please note that there's an upcoming Dogecoin hardfork and the 1.8 client is a required update as of block 371,337 (est. 11th September). Hi bobster,

I got to say, coingecko is plain awesome to get an insight into cryptos. I keep recommending it everywhere.

Anyways, I got a question. The development points are calculated from github stats only, but we at the darkcoin team use in addition for publishing the code at github a jira instance to tack bugs
http://jira.darkcoin.qa/browse/DRK-67?jql=project%20%3D%20DRK which is where the main activity is happening. Is there any chance to include these stats?

Hi vertoe, thank you for the link. I had a look at it and we will see what we can do about integrating the issue stats. Is there an API where we can get Total Issues and Closed Issues? We will need these two stats to integrate it into our site. Github API gave us those two stats. Thanks.

We improved our price chart load speed massively over the weekend! Go check it out now. Sample: Litecoin - https://www.coingecko.com/en/price_charts/litecoin/btc

Also we have now added 60 days and 90 days price charts to CoinGecko too:
Litecoin 60 days price chart: https://www.coingecko.com/en/price_charts/litecoin/btc/60_days
Litecoin 90 days price chart: https://www.coingecko.com/en/price_charts/litecoin/btc/90_days

Let us know what else you would like to see improved on CoinGecko!

Well, many traders just launch their bots in the dark, without really knowing which coins are really worth it. This could provide some nice stats next to the gray, boring pricecharts.

I'd like to submit MagiCoin then Wink It's a CPU-coin that has it's own algo (M7M, GPU-unfriendly adaptation of the algo used by XCN), and is on Bittrex, Poloniex, etc..

You are right that it is high-time that we build a search feature now that we have over 150 coins. We have definitely added many coins in the past few months. We only started with 20 coins so we have definitely come a long way and are working hard to make our rank more comprehensive!

The good news is we have already added MagiCoin (XMG)! Here it the URL: https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/magi

While I'm at it here are few other Magi pages:
Magi Price Charts: https://www.coingecko.com/en/price_charts/magi/btc

Just found out about your site, we desperately need a replacement to coinmarketcap.. your site looks like a good option.

One question I have, I see you accept donations in BTC, LTC and DOGE, and so you probably have a vested interested in seeing those coins appreciate.  How can we be sure that you haven't "tweaked" your ranking algorithm to give those coins a slight advantage resulting in higher rankings? (Obviously BTC should be #1, but Doge at #2???)

Keep up the good work!

Hi slothbag, we have been wanting to add a page with all the coins donation addresses on our site but that is such a low priority todo that we never seem to get to doing that. We want to accept many coins and what you see there has been around for months simply as a way for people to donate if they like what we do. Those few coins listed seem to be popular and have been requested so it's been added but we will need to add the page with all the coin donation addresses to make it fair as you said Smiley

Hi bobster,

I was wondering if you can make some updates to the Cannacoin CoinGecko ratings.  We have a few updates recently:

1) Switched from scrypto PoW to Proof-of-Stake Velocity on Dec 8th 2014... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=740903.0

2) Our total supply thus is 4,625,000 Cannacoins mined through PoW and 2% Interest PoSV

3) We have two new block explorers:

http://explorer.cannapay.io/

https://chainz.cryptoid.info/ccn/

4) Can you please update the Cannacoin stats with our facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CCNProject

5) Please update also the coin repository info: https://github.com/Cannacoin-Project/Cannacoin

Not at the moment. The current widget is dynamic in the sense that the price displayed will be the current price of the coin whenever the page is refreshed. If it is a static image, it will stay constant forever.

Hi guys,

We have some updates here. Smiley

Firstly, we made some major improvement to our coin dashboard. Many of you have requested for us to allow custom timeline on our dashboard. We are proud to inform you that this is now possible! Check out this GIF to see how fast you can switch timeline for each of your favorite coin now!

We have also received several requests to customise the currencies shown for each coin. For example, you may prefer BTC to be denominated in EUR while LTC to be denominated in USD and DOGE to be in BTC. Now you can set all these in the Settings page. Take a look at this:

What do you think of this new update to our dashboard? We would love to hear your opinions!
If you still do not have our altcoin dashboard, you MUST totally get hold of it! Go grab your invitation now by clicking on this invitation link!

Secondly, we added a bunch of coins which I did not manage to post previously. We now track 169 cryptocurrencies. So happy to see that we are nearing 200 coins soon! Here are some of the new coin additions:

Batch 1: Aidbit (AID), Fantomcoin (FCN), GamersCoin (GMC), GlowShares (GSX), Piggycoin (PIGGY), Stealthcoin (XST)
Batch 2: Bytecent (BYC), Dogecoindark (DOGED), Guarany (GUA), LTBcoin (LTBC), Noblecoin (NOBL), Paycoin (XPY), Spreadcoin (SPR), Supercoin (SUPER),  Swarm (SWARM)

We are still taking coin recommendations so if you still do not see your favorite altcoin on CoinGecko feel free to reply here or drop us an email at hello@coingecko.com!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May the year 2015 be an better year for crypto in general Cheesy

Here are the new coins:

We have also added a new feature which has been widely requested - a search bar! Now you can easily search for your favorite altcoin on CoinGecko!

We also launched a content section called CoinGecko Buzz!

Hi all, we just added the following coins to CoinGecko. We now track over 200 cryptocurrencies!

We have also launched our Russian and Indonesian sites!
RU: https://www.coingecko.com/ru
ID: https://www.coingecko.com/id

We also released a price ticker image widget that can be used in forums postings like this. The price will be updated dynamically in the image file below. All you need to do is head to our price widget page here: https://www.coingecko.com/en/widgets/ticker/litecoin/btc
Check out this Litecoin price widget:
"litecoin price"

You may insert the following code for Litecoin:
Code:
[url=https://www.coingecko.com/en/price_charts/litecoin/btc?id=litecoin][img alt="litecoin price"]https://www.coingecko.com/en/widget_component/ticker/litecoin/btc.jpg?id=litecoin[/img][/url]

Finally, we have also posted a few new articles on CoinGecko Buzz:

Thank you for the support. For more suggestions on what we should work on next, do write over here!

This?

*snip*

Can add these bits to give a fuller picture?

Keep up the good work.

Thanks  Grin

Hi Daedelus, *snip*

Our long term plan is to include the numbers you highlighted but we are finding it hard to go to every single coin forums and getting these numbers. There does not seem to be one standard way to get the numbers from all the coin forums so this is pretty challenging on our side. I have to agree with you though that these numbers are very important and is something that we very much want to track.

Thank you very much for the feedback. Let us know if you have more suggestions Cheesy

Any progress? This is important for a lot of communities since this forum has become an enormous cesspool  Grin

Hey, bobster. Do you have some plans on making API? I'd like to use it for my researches. Thanks.

We may possibly have some plans for API. Can you drop me an email at bobby@coingecko.com to discuss your research further? Thank you.
I want to track if price changes depend on X or Y, etc. I'm also going to use google trends and some other tools. I only have some drafts ATM. I'll drop a letter when I have an exact plan.

Sorry for the late reply. You brought up a very good point! We have since fixed the problem:

It will now use the same search term that we use for our Bing stats as well. It is currently searching for "nxt coin" to see the Google Trends.
You can take a look at NXT page here: https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/nxt

Hello,

I was just taking a look at your coingecko website, and noticed that a lot of your information for Mintcoin is outdated or incorrect.

For one thing, the entire github repository you have listed and pulling statistics from is incorrect. The Mintcoin Community split off and created a new repository for Mintcoin sometime last year.

This is the new, updated, correct and active GibHub for Mintcoin:

https://github.com/MintcoinCommunity/Mintcoin-Desktop-Wallet

If you could update this that would be great as that old code repository is no longer being used.

Other things that need to be updated:

Under the Data section:
Discussion Forum (remove dead link). Replace with http://www.mintcoinofficial.com/forums/

Under the About section:
In the last paragraph, remove "A total of 70 billion MintCoin will be minted throughout the entire lifecycle using both POW and POS. " This is not a true statement.

What you could say instead:
There is no coin cap, in order to replace lost coins and provide sustainable global scalability. The coin now runs 100% POS (proof-of-stake) to secure the network. After the year 2016, Stakers aka Minters will receive a fixed 5% APR (annual percentage rate) indefinitely, as a reward for securing the network.

Another thing you might add to your Data:

Mintcoin Community official YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/user/MintcoinCommunity

Thanks!

FYI: This is still incorrect on Mintcoin...

Available/Total Supply    21.9 Billion / 70 Billion

Remove the 70 billion Roll Eyes

Thank you.

Stop Mining.   Start Minting.   Mintcoin  [MINT]
5% annual minting reward. Mintcoins don't wear out like mining gear. They keep on minting!

I dont know if it exists or not, so if it does then ignore my post.

But i would like if you would put a feature so that you can compare 2 cryptocurrencies and show all their stats side-by-side in a table and see the difference between them.

Perferably compare multiple cryptocurrencies.

I am watching NXT,NEM,ETH and it would be really nice if I could view them side-by-side and see the difference between them. Thanks!

Hi RealBitcoin, yes that is indeed a good feature to build. We certainly thought of implementing it before. Good to hear that there are people out there who would really like this feature and will justify our time building it Smiley

I've got a question about one of your measuring factors, namely liquidity. The measure itself states that this is:

Quote
Total 24 Hour Trading Volume in BTC

If this is used as measure it is pretty much useless in my opinion. Would it be possible to change this to, for instance, the ratio of "Total 24 Hour Trading Volume in BTC" to "Market Capatilization"? This ratio is mostly used in "official" liquidity measurements as well.

P.S. Thanks for all your hard work, I really like the site and appreciate that you are doing it.

That is an interesting ratio to consider. We will consider it for future enhancement of our formula. Thank you for the suggestion.
In the meantime, we take into account both trading volume and market capitalization in our rank.

Is these kind of sites profitable to make, how do they earn money? I saw another the other day advertised in this forum as well which is this one http://coinwik.org/ site seem to allow anyone to register and edit your own coin if you have.  If its profitable the more sites like these will pop later.

Well it is if you are good at what you are doing. I am not talking about development process and design process and UX and so forth, they are given, you have to be amazing at all of those.

On top of that you need to know what you are talking about, you need to be well versed in cryptocurrencies and you need to be able to follow every single news about them (not just huge news, all of them) and if you do all of this perfectly, than ONLY THAN you can make a good profit.

Hi guys, good to see some interesting debate here about how websites like CoinGecko make money. As like almost any other websites on the Internet these days, publishers make money mostly from advertisements. Is it great money? It's alright - not super much but sufficient to keep cover costs & salary with some doughnut money Smiley

Supercrypt is right in saying that we need to be good at what we do and follow development of cryptocurrencies else it will be hard to keep track of the fast-changing crypto world!

Just wanted to say thanks for your site - the community and developer metrics have been unbelievably valuable to me......coins share a lot of similarities with VC investments, and it is good to see that you realize that through these metrics not seen anywhere else.

No idea how you would do it, but this very forum is extremely valuable to these newer coins and it would be great to get a number dragged in from here as well, relating to master threads. Unlikely, but throught I would throw it out there. Also number of transactions on the blockchain itself (not market cap). While related to volume, it also demonstrates the coin's ability / rubber meeting the road absent of exchange-based activity. Just an idea.

Well done on the ICO addition too.
