I have only been able to read a fraction of this thread. Too depressing.

I paid for a holiday rental in 2013 and paid a security deposit in cash (Vienna). I left the apartment without collecting the deposit, therefore he insisted on returning it in Bitcoin. I agreed (after a little research - never heard of it when he suggested it) and downloaded the wallet. I left the wallet on my PC, however a subsequent electrical blue flash killed my PC and with it 30 Bitcoins. I never expected it to take off so never reinvested.

It wasn't that big a problem until Dec13. It felt like a small amount of cash at the time.

This shouldnt be a thread but a ``submit your bitcoin amount  here``  and it should display the AVERAGE bitcoin amount submitted.

The bad thing is when someone submits he owns one satoshi and the average is so much less
OR someone submits 10 mil btc and average goes up very much

So he might have split his funds around multiple wallets as a safety/security precaution and practice.

Yup. Bitcoin-QT (or most wallets I assume) splits across multiple addresses automatically in order for security.

PHP / Python developer. PM for more information.

there is no point for him because he has the same password for all of them and unless it is cold stored then it isnt safe anyway

Nothing is safe.

If I have 100BTC ==> I will split to 10 adresses ==> 10 oldies computers from 1999/2002

there are some boundaries for safe enough or not safe enough

How did you find this address?

i was checking some of my payments on blockchain when i did notice big amount of btc transferred.
first i was thinking that it can be some kind of exchange transferring money from one account to another but after spending some time on blockchain it was looking really doggy...
There are a lot transaction with this same amount transferred and in addiction to this money get split into smaller transfers.

I hope this are not bitcoins from MtGox...
