I'm a software developer who just found Bitcoin yesterday and am totally excited by it. I've been looking for a non-government issued currency for a while and Bitcoin seems to fit the ticket very well. Of course, I'm wanting to contribute to the community I'm wondering about a project I've been mulling over all day.

Are there any services that allow you to send/receive Bitcoin by SMS? Think about Paypal and how you can send someone money by their mobile website. Now, just extend that to a regular SMS message. Is it something anyone would find useful? Does it already exist?  If it doesn't exist and if it's of interest, I think I might take the project on.

Thanks!

Someone is developing (looks like it's going well) a cell phone client. Android I believe.
I don't think a simple SMS would work except for just sending your public key hash.
That's not really something you need a program for though.
There are lots of things to develop though because it's so new.
Take a look around there are lists of things people would like to see.

Glad to have you in the community.

Thanks Stonetz,

I guess this shows how new I am to the Bitcoin economy and how much I still have to learn. I'll poke around and see what needs to be done and jump in on those issues. Thanks for the feedback!

For mobile there is
  Bitcoin-js-remote    http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin-js-remote
  and
  Spesmilo http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Spesmilo

All Bitcoin clients:

If you simply are looking for SMS notification of payments received to your own mobile, that can be done using MyBitcoin (using your mobile's email to phone mail address.)

There's now an SMS service that allows some bitcoin transactions where the charges are billed to the mobile phone bil (for those in Belgium and the Netherlands):

Twitter > SMS imo

In general yeah but it would be nice to have both.
Especially if it's just something real quick or one party doesn't use twitter.
