A friend of mine wants me to help him get a bunch of antminers going.  I told him I didn't think it'd make enough BTC to be worth the effort, but he's hard headed and wants to do it anyhow if he can get the parts cheaply enough on ebay.

He wants to use one of these 49 port hubs because it has a 24 pin connector for power, so power should be no problem:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/49-Port-Powered-USB-2-0-Hub-Bitcoin-Litecoin-Erupter-Mining-Miner-/111330856924?pt=US_USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item19ebd60fdc

Then he wants to fill it with Antminer U2s.  His goal is 100 Ghash, so a bunch of 2.0 Ghash U2's very slightly overclocked, should do it.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/BITMAIN-ANTMINER-U2-1-6-4-0Gh-s-ASIC-Bitcoin-Miner-APAC-Sole-Agency-17-/321383618460?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item4ad3f4d79c

He figures if we lowball the sellers we should be able to do it all for under $400, all in.  I have power supplies we can use to power the 49 port hub, and an old Dell laptop to run the miner program, as well as a 12 inch fan to cool them.

My question is, is this good parts selection and worth the trouble?  I know 100 Ghash ain't much in today's BTC mining, but he wants to just turn them on and let them run, and eventually hope to collect a few BTC out of them for profit.

Should we, or not worth the hassle?  I have always been very anti-ASIC, but since BitCoin has already been ruined by ASIC miners, I figure we don't have much to lose on it.

Buying an actual S1 directly from Bitmain ends up being cheaper, and you get almost double the hashing power.

Yes, after looking over it, that would be a better deal.

The evolution from using general purpose computing to specific purpose computing is a natural evolution.  Your statement suggests you can not adopt to evolution so I suggest you invest your time and money in an endeavor you are more comfortable.  USB miners are fun.  I have a few of as many as I can just for run.  But you are never ever, ever gonna make money with usb miners.

You should rather mine with a cloud mining service like CEX.IO
Current prices are 0.0094/Ghs for contracts which start mining now and 0.0083 BTC/Ghs for contracts which start mininng on 26th of April (FHA)
With CEX.IO you can start mining today without any hardware running at home.

Bad advice, cloud mining services are all overpriced.

If you're going to get an Antminer, get the S1, not the U1.  At least you can sell the Antminer S1 after you're done mining with it in a couple months.

Really, I don't know what's the intended purpose of the U1.  The S1 though, is actually the best ASIC out there. They're affordable, scalable, efficient for 55nm, durable and in stock.

Buying a s1 would probably be better as you'd save time and space im assuming, maybe costs. 100 gh/s is the bare minimum, maybe $4 a day? I mean go ahead if you want to, but IMO I'd just wait for prices to go down a little bit more and just buy a bitcoin outright.

Why wait?  Anything sub $500 is a good deal for BTC.  We just got PBOC'ed by China again overnight, but still remain resilient in bouncing back up.

Buy BTC up now.   Wink
