I just bought some 5870's and im running them under windows 7 with gui miner and msi afterburner. If I drop the memory clock below 500 my computer freezes.  Could this be because im using windows or should it be able to be underclocked below 500.

use cgminer. 5870s should be able to go much lower.

Don't try to use MSI and cgminer at the same time.  Just use cgminer.

When I use cgminer at 975 clock it barely gives me 400,  gui miner at 950 is giving me 425.  Not sure why.

what is GPU load?  If it is less than 99% at higher clock them something is idling the card.  heat or power are the most common reasons.

my 5870 get 425 with cgminer at  930/300

start low and work your way up.. cgminer doesn't reach full capacity right away, you have to let it run for a while

My bottom limit for mem clock on a 5870 was 300MHz, but tbh I didn't really see any significant difference in temps or power draw by going that low.

use cgminer 2.02

i slow down drastically with the new one using a 5870 and dont feel like investigating it much when 2.02 works fine for me.

I would lock up as well, on numbers under 500 using trixx. I switched to cgminer and now I am at 150 for memory clock.

IT IS MUCH COOLER. Mousepotato, either you card didnt actually down clock, or you didnt wait long enough for the temps to drop it is much cooler for me.
