Could side chains thwart a 51% attack?

I've been hearing chatter about these 'side chains' although I don't understand exactly what they do or how they work.   But I was just thinking, would it be possible to use a sidechain to somehow include all transactions that would be excluded by malicious attacker in the event of a 51% attack?

Just brainstorming here.
