How to get coin difficulty programmatically

I need to develop an application about altcoins and one of the goals is to show the current difficulty of many altcoins in realtime.
How one can do that? I know that it's possible via API call to wallet but is it possible without having a wallet installed?
May be there are some services with such functionality?
