Question?

Is there an easy tool to figure out the per KB fee?

Not before constructing a transaction, because it depends on the outputs that are chosen to use for it.

So the amount of data that is used for the transaction dictates the fee and that may vary from transaction to transaction.  Also does mixing factor into how much data is generated.  Trying to wrap my rookie level understanding around this.

Yes it certainly does. It is proportional to the number of inputs times the mix factor, plus space for the outputs (usually smaller), plus some fixed overhead for the headers.

fluffypony, tacotime, can you unveil new Monero Monday Missive politics? They will be on regular time basis or not?

It is NOT in written in stone. Just when there is something new to add. Read the last one a few times it is Massive! and will cover half this year! LOL

It was a great document about the past and what's coming up in the future, I personally found it very interesting and helpful. What's missing are timelines, of any kind for 2015. Even something by quarter would be helpful and a positive boost to those who need some justification for holding a coin that has had them "under water" for months now.

Otherwise, extremely well done.

Unfortunately it's impossible to give timelines. Let me explain why:

- a contributor who is reliable and gets paid for his work may be able to put in 8 hours a day. But since we're completely unfunded and our costs vastly outstrip our donations, chances are we can only afford to pay him for a period of time. Once money dries up, there goes that contributor.

- an unpaid contributor may be able to put in a few hours a day now, but if he gets a job offer, or has a kid, or gets bored, well...there goes that contributor.

In view of this, it would be irresponsible of us to make assumptions and give timelines that we're almost guaranteed to miss as situations and circumstances change. This will definitely change in the future as Monero-oriented operations like MyMonero or Crypto Kingdom or MoneroClub grow and start putting funds back to core development, which will give us stable cash flow, and thus the ability to be predictively productive.

Until that time, it's going to be a bit of a chicken-or-egg scenario.

Blockchain (faster sync)
All updated live and always current.

Are you sure this list (from OP) is always current?

I downloaded the 2.3 gb Windows blockchain from the link above and started out 125 days behind. I am now still 114 days behind seem to keep getting stuck.

Thanks!

Yes it certainly does. It is proportional to the number of inputs times the mix factor, plus space for the outputs (usually smaller), plus some fixed overhead for the headers.

Just to add to smooth's points - because we can't predict what the fee will be, a transaction is constructed as follows:

1. Create the transaction with the minimum fee
2. Measure its kb size
3. If the fee is correct for the size, it's all done, else increase the fee to match the size and go back to 1

The reason it is done that way is because a change in fee may introduce an additional input, which may subsequently increase the size, and thus the fee will no longer be correct.

Therefore, there's no way to intelligently estimate the fee until the transaction has actually been built.

The auto-updater is down at the moment as we're moving servers around, but it shouldn't have fallen back to 125 days behind. I'll take a look at it this afternoon and see if I can finish the move and bring it back up.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate your predicament and understand the need to not present unrealistic expectations in the current environment.  My hope would be that at some point the funding, cashflow and stability would allow for some semblance of a development timeline. I know that people with various resources invested in Monero, appreciate knowing at least a rough timeframe as to when something new will be delivered.

Again thanks for your response and all that you do!

Based on the block number I started with (I cant remember it exactly) I was definitely 125 + days behind after putting the blockchain in the proper folder. As of this moment I am only on block 230418 (108 days behind).

I will get there slowly but I still think it would be very helpful for the link to be current for the benefit of new users. Thanks again!

2 more questions:

1. What is the current recommended amount of RAM for running bitmonerod? I saw 4GB listed at one point but that was late summer. Is more needed now?

2. If someone does not have enough RAM for bitmonerod? How can they verify their current balance? I know you can use simple wallet to create an offline wallet without using bitmonerod and generate an address to receive payments. For example can the view key be used for this purpose somehow by using the block explorer to check the current balance for an address in cold storage?

You can connect your simplewallet to a public node (subject to some security downgrade considerations). One such node is https://www.moneroclub.com/node. This will require a lot less RAM.
The view key can not yet be used for this, as there are no available tools for this yet. It is one of the intended purposes of the view key, though.

Monero Status Android Widget

A friend of mine made an android widget and app.

After monerochain.info going down and serious lack of time pretty much killed it, Monero Status is back!

Great!
I'm a huge fan of that widget :-D

is not started or passed wrong port. Please, make sure that daemon is running
or restart the wallet with correct daemon address.

What's going on? Worked fine two days ago.

My Antivirus was blocking it without telling me. It had never blocked it before. It had been added to AVG Exceptions previously so I do not know why it is being blocked. Scans are negative.

Blockchain (faster sync)
All updated live and always current.

Are you sure this list (from OP) is always current?

I downloaded the 2.3 gb Windows blockchain from the link above and started out 125 days behind. I am now still 114 days behind seem to keep getting stuck.

No reason it should get stuck though. Do you have enough RAM to run a node?

4 GB is a bare minimum that might still work on Windows (might require tweaking virtual memory settings), but if it does it will be slow. 6 GB should work reasonably well.

I am using an old machine that I only use for crypto wallets/cold storage.  I have 6GB but based on my problems I am thinking about buying more

I've loaded the blockchain many a times  - the era of "114 days behind" takes a while to process. That blocktime is roughly 4 months ago, which is sort of around  the attack as indicated on the timeline https://forum.monero.cc/1/news-and-announcements/134/monday-monero-missives-22-year-in-review-january-5th-2015. Again, I don't know much about the black magic of blockchain processing, I've always just assumed that that attack had something to do with the amount of time required to process "114 days behind".  I might just be making it up though - perhaps a dev can chime in.

If you just let it run, it'll eventually sync. My bitmonerod is taking up 5.44 gigs

This same exact thing happened to me last weekend when I had to rebuild a windows machine.  Started at 125 days behind.
