Hi all, newbie to the forum, been mining for about a week now.  I tried using P2Pool a few days ago, but I don't think it's working right.  Here's what's going on:

I'm on Win7 x64
I downloaded P2Pool for Windows and run as follows:
1. Created a bitcoin.conf in the proper location with lines:
rpcuser=USER
rpcpassword=PASS
server=1

2. Open a command prompt and run:
Run_p2pool USER PASS

3. Open another command prompt and run CGMiner as follows:
cgminer -O u:p -o http://127.0.0.1:9332/

Everything seems to be working, and my GPU shows activity and normal GH/s numbers, but very little shares are being accepted.  I'm talking like 2 shares per hour, while the rest are discarded.  I keep getting the message "LONGPOLL requested work restart, waiting on fresh work".  It shows that message every 15-20 seconds or so.

Am I missing something in my configuration?  Why isn't this working?

Thanks!

I believe shares are slower because they are not difficulty 1. When I tried it I was getting similar results, and my share difficulty was something like 150. Perhaps someone else can answer that knows better than me.

Thanks, I feel like I'm not even processing shares though with the messages I'm getting.  CGMiner seems to be abandoning shares almost 100% of the time.  Any ideas?  I've successfully mined with CGMiner in other pools with no problem, so I feel like I'm missing something with P2Pool.

There is a long pool every time the share chain updates.  difficulty for p2pool shares is much higher.

Ok, but do the messages regarding long polling that I'm getting seem normal?  And, does it seem logical that I'd only be accepting 2 shares per hour at a 280 GH/s rate?

Well I doubt you have 280 GH/s. Smiley  280 MH/s would be roughly 234 DIFFICULTY 1 shares per hour.  p2pool uses much higher diffiuclty shares.  IIRC it is right around 100 right now.  So 234/100 = 2.34 shares per hour.

Yes, you're right...280 MH/s Smiley  Ok, so seems like I'm in line with what I should expect then?  I'm just used to a much higher share/hr rate with "normal" pools, so I was confused...especially with the messages I was getting.  Thanks!

No problem.  Remember share is simply an arbitrary unit.  Most pools uses a share difficulty of 1 however p2pool needs to distribute all shares to entire network and that would result in a lot of excess communication and potential network splits so it uses a larger share to keep that intra-node share communication at an acceptable level.

Kinda like cashing your paycheck in lots of $1 bills or less $100 bills.  Either option has the same value.  In one you are breaking the value into arbitrary $1 units and in the other into $100 units.

This is all perfectly normal. The difficulty for shares rises when pool hashrate grows. So you submit less shares than in most other pools. The difficulty is adjusted so that about every 10 seconds a share is generated in the network. p2pool holds a chain of shares, like bitcoin holds a chain of blocks (blockchain). Every time a share is accepted in the p2pool network your miners get new work via longpolling.
