The title says it all. It takes ages for it to open first of all, and then twice as that for it to "Synchronize with the network" Huh
The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Why not making it lightweight and more pleasant aesthetically?

They wanted that update to look good, and be better PR. Honestly, that wasn't the best update they've done.
