most people would focus on securing and maintaining a LIQUID market (which vrc is not and has not been for over a year) that is actually used for the one coin they already have before adding another in to the mix.

and how can the devs promise to support this new coin at a set exchange rate with out heavy manipulation or negatively impacting the market of vericoin


it would seem to some that...

that this ICO is an attempt to replenish the devs warchest that was given away and regain a percentage of stake in the vericoin network with out actually having to spend the bitcoins to aquire it.

maybe this is the best option after all after handing over a large % of the network to a group that will never stop using vrc to bolster up their own projects or allow for vrc to exceed the value of them

It was really amazing at the time, because Vericoin was a much bigger deal then.  I can't recall the exact amount stolen, but I believe it was a large percentage of all the VRC in existence.  So much that if VRC hadn't forked it would be effectively dead.  So in that sense I think it was a little different than the ETH situation, where ETH would be hurt badly but probably could survive even without a fork.  The VRC fork was a big enough deal though that I remember LTC dev Coblee arguing angrily against it (seemed like kind of a dick about it to be honest).  Anyway you're right; VRC is sort of the fork-to-prevent-theft trailblazer.

To be honest I don't see a big issue with projects hard forking in their infancy. However billion dollar chains hard forking to cater for their founder's investment... I do have an issue with that.

Also a big difference is the coins were stolen through no fault of the Vericoin developers.  From everything I have read the faulty code in ETH was known for about a year so if that was the case it wasn't a matter of if but when. After the rollback the team took a yea but cause with PoST so if something like the mental hacked ever happen again the coin couldn't be controlled. So it was a bad situation with people on both sides of the fence BUT they took that opportunity to improve the protocol for the better and that to be commended!!

In these crazy times for BTC, from altcoins I only feel comfortable holding Vericoin and DigyByte. I am pretty sure we will see more people turn again to crypto as a currency and not crypto as tokens. Especially with BTC flying past $1k until the end of 2016.

We won't be closing this thread again.  We actually waited till we were presenting something new to open this thread so it was a more interesting discussion and to address a larger audience. While working on PoST, I realized we can improve PoW by making time variable as well. This was the beginning of Verium because variable block time is good for security and efficiency of mining, but not so great for transactions. That's when I realized PoW is inherently more of a commodity and PoS is inherently more of a currency. An optimal system requires both with separate protocols.

The developers didn't really want an ICO.  But people myself included from the vericoin forum wanted to get some Verium, since I and other don't mine coins.  Thats why one of the ideas for raising money is putting 50% of the funds stored cold and use the money off of the interest.
