looking at the whole incident, the chargeback seems the only right thing, but only from and to a certain point in the timeline

what you fail to see is what this might cause in future, what power you gave to a small group and what abusive potential you created. the chargeback is and looks good right to the point where you take away the "stolen" (stolen my a**) from the ones that caused this. but everything AFTER this is negative development. from now on, whenever someone with the right amount of power, influence, coins or whatever is needed, wants to cause a chargeback, they have a good chance to reach that goal by screaming HACKER and getting the gullible mass to approve actions for "the greater good"

besides that, it was stated in this thread that it was a _one_time_thing_. no more chargebacks in future. and yet you want to rush to the media, you want to reach investors with this story and tell them payp--vericoin is secure from thievery? yeah, what are you going to tell them when next time a situation like this erupts. and don't come with "it's impossible to happen again"

So...in the future if 45% of the coins get stolen...what should be done? Kinda hard to consistently explain the reasoning...huh?

His words mean nothing. His actions speak louder. Anyone can say something to restore confidence in the short term. In the long term I suspect this will be the reason VRC fails.

I think this incident will show that rollback options will need to be part of every
coin including Bitcoin in the case of catastrophic system damage such
as what happened with the 8 million coin theft.

Otherwise regular mainstream users will not trust Crypto with their money - ever.

Don't let archaic ideals cloud the future of this experiment. I think this VRC
case will be looked back on as a groundbreaking event that helped bring crypto to
the masses.

Trust makes money work.
It's only logical that the system can defend itself from attacks that can kill it.

I will favor investment in coins that have this capability myself.
No one wants to put their money into defenseless vapor.

I agree - The developers might not as Patrick has said "We can't do this again."

However the recovery options will need to be much more sophisticated than simple rollbacks because this needs a number complicated problems such as merchants who exchanged goods for currency which was later made worthless.

As a wider point - eventually if cryptocurrencies ever go "Mainstream" then unless the world order changes (a radical change in human civilization departing from thousands of years of history), then it will be brought under the control of the federal reserve and all the other banking cartels/central banks of the world - they will be the masters of this new crypto economy - being able subtract and add to the money supply at their will. They will use any and all means they can to achieve this control, using similar secretive methods they used to setup the Federal Reserve all those years ago.

people didn't realize that rollback saved their asses = 1.45 million euros will put any exchanger down = so mintpal down = all crypto gone : zs , min , mint , btc , ltc ....etc = other exchnages will go down also = because they have transfers between them = it will be like subprim crisis with banks = pyramid = all exchanges will close

IF you having sync issues and not connecting to network. Make sure you are running 1.3.3 if you not it will not sync. Best is uninstall client and then download new client from website vericoin website. Check via help about to see if you running correct client. As always make sure you backup your wallet.dat file...

Mintpal is hardly biting the bullet on this as they got a bail out for all of the VRC they lost due to incompetence.

Only 1 thing seems to be clear, people are only on this thread to make this coin FAIL!! When I see all the Newbie accounts being active at this thread, come on this is too obvious. Besides these Newbie accounts I only see Hero accounts who are active with Crypto since forever complain about this... Reason for this, to protect their investment as this coin has potential to take away a part of the BitCoins market. As is has Bitsend and a real-life usable transaction time, these 2 things combined give me the trust that this will / could be the future.

However the hack (weird it only hit VRC as BTC and LTC were targetted, read Mintpal statement) did some damage to the coin. Every day I read more and more posts, I get more and more doubts if this whole hack was not directly targetted agains VRC to make it FAIL!

Same thing happened to me at first. Then I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wallet instead of just installing over the top of the old one, and that worked for me.

Like I wrote earlier, I think for some reason, it is not overwriting the vericoin-qt.exe if you have it already, if you rename it or delete it, or point the installer to a new folder, then it works. It didn't do this on previous versions though, so I wonder if the installer has an issue.
Just don't forget if you are doing these things to back up your vericoin wallet.dat, just to be safe.

Of course the large VRC holders will go on Twitter / Bitcointalk and give VRC support, back the other exchanges, say nothing has changed and coin will do well. They want to make sure the price goes up and they can sell to those people buying at a higher price. Fall into their trap and buy higher or let the whales suffer and just go buy another coin.
