Hello!

I have a problem with cooling down my Antminers. I currently have two of them and they produce a crapload of heat which I don't need. What I need help with is cooling the antminers so they wouldn't produce so much heat and noise when the fan goes crazy on cooling them. How should I try to cool them?

I think you need to understand the physics of this, heat is a factor of energy, the miners chips use X amount of energy and produce Y amount of heat. They will always produce the same amount of heat from the energy consumed.

You can do two things.

1. Lower the ambient heat levels
This can be done by moving to a cooler climate or installing airconditioning or managing the airflow in the room where the miners are located. It doesn't stop the miners making the heat but will hopefully not make the heat worse.

2. Reduce the amount of energy consumed
This can be done by underclocking or undervolting the miners. Try checking the threads in this very forum related to this.

But basically you can't make them produce less heat by cooling them, you can just not add to their heat envelope. To make them produce less heat you have to make them use less energy.

Hope this helps.

Yes I understand that, but if I place shitload of fans around the miners the whole room will not be like sauna. If I don't they heat up the whole room. Sorry if my question was unclear. I guess Ill just have to keep window open all the time.

Edit: Do you have any idea how much underclocking would take down the heat? Or GH/s?

Its the airflow and exhausting of the heat from the window thats keeping the ambient down. No matter what you do you have to remove the heat from the ambient air or it will just compound the overheating of the miners. As you have discovered, getting good airflow *and* keeping the window open is what works.

Even if you had aircon you still have to get rid of the hot ambient air. The rules don't change.

Underclocking will reduce heat and GH/s, underclocking slightly and undervolting will be more effective, but requires more technical knowledge. Check this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=526060.0

But its  all probably moot depending on the ambient temperatures you are experiencing.

The other option is putting them somewhere where the noise/heat doesn't bother you, like a garage or shed or warehouse or datacenter etc.

I have 5 S1's and a Dragon unit in an office. The office is probably around 500 SQ FT. I have a AC unit in there, but even that does not put a dent in the amount heat the units put out. It would be possible to move them to my warehouse, which is probably 5 times as large. The issue there is my warehouse is not insulated well and I live in the South, where it will be 100 F in the summer.

Looks like now I am going to need to remove my in wall AC unit and replace that with an exhaust fan, a pretty large one. Then get a portable AC unit to feed cold air to the miners. Noise is a non factor, all of these were once in my spare office at my home. That is really the only option I see to be able to keep the S1's under 50 C when running and keep them alive for a while longer.

I spent two terrible nights with two S1's in my bedroom... I feel for you. My saving grace was the basement.

I have my miners in the dryer room and used the existing dryer duct and an inline fan to blow the heat out of my home.

Yeah, that or you could just provide them ventilation: outside cool air (assuming you have access or the climate) in and heated air from heatsinks pulled outdoors. The real key is to ensure you're exhausting the hot air, otherwise it'll just get sucked back through the heatsink and heated further (and so on).

I had 15 antminers but I got rid of them as I saw summer approaching - it sure was easy keeping them cool in the winter (with -20C air from outdoors) but I wasn't looking forward to dealing with all that heat in summer temps.

I don't think the OP understands that fans don't actually cool the air. Your just mixing the generated heat with the ambient air. The only way to actually cool the air is to...

- Exhaust the heat generated by the miners outside.
- Underclock/undervolt the miners.
- Or add auxiliary cooling such as A/C.

I live in the desert and currently have 3 S1s in my garage each with an additional pull-fan. I won't ever be bringing them inside because I already have a houseful of other miners. I'm curious how long I'll be able to run them before they die. So far we've had temps well above 90 and they continue to run fine. The BFL Singles I had in the garage just started to spew hardware errors so I finally had to shut them down.

I have one, it's a great unit. Puts out a ton of cold air.

There's an addon module which allows for network connectivity (e.g. shell, SNMP) and a separate temp sensor which looks interesting - at least at the right price.

This looks great! Does it work good? Do you have any kind of fan at the other side of the tube or just the tube itself?

he needs a fan on the other end.    needs to be a powerful fan.

That (your pabst fan) is a poor choice for this application: too little cfm and axial fans are not suited to moving air through ducts etc.

I just got one of those last week. I have it cooling a room with a FrankenJup and an S1. The room now stays at a chilly 85f, lol. But at least the home A/C can now switch off once in awhile. It was running 24/7 otherwise.

I am not sure about the thermodynamics of it. Where does the heat exhaust go? In other words, does it have windows exhaust? Heat has to be transferred somewhere.

This Delta fan(240cfm) being used as the pull fan lowered temps from 49 to 40:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835213001

The problem is:

- cost
- uses 25w
- noise
- buying adapters for 4 pin

I tried a basic 120mm fan and it made no difference. There must be something between the delta and something more reasonable that will work.

NMB-MAT 4715KL-04W-B40/50: http://www.nmbtc.com/pdf/dcfans/4715kl.pdf.

A few of my ants were shipped from bitmain with these fans (which had obviously seen significant 'burn-in test" time..) before they switched over to cheaper/more available alternatives.

Personally, I find that these things are a perfect balance between noise and cooling capability. In general fan noise doesn't both me; it's the resonance and/or squeal that some exhibit - I've never had a 4715KL which has this particular problem. Loud yes, but tolerable.

Unfortunately it can be difficult to source PWM capable versions of these fans - eBay usually has them for sale by scavengers who loot various retired IT appliances (e.g. PSUs, servers, UPS) that make use of this fan. Not for cheap either - as they seem to be in high demand.

Digikey stocks the standard 3 wire version, and again not for cheap
