I just recently purchased an XFX 5870 with the non-reference cooler, and I'm not liking the temp that it runs at when its placed in a system with another 5870. It runs at 73 C but a card with the reference cooler in a similar dual card mining rig runs at 63C tops - and that's overclocked to 900 MHz.

So, my question is this: Does anyone have a reference ATI 5870 cooler to sell me?

Edit: Hmm..I read somewhere that the non reference XFX HD-587X-ZNFC board is a bit shorter than the one with the reference cooler. Does anyone else have this card as well? Any solution to upgrade the cooling solution to one that exhausts out the back?

replace the fan with a reference fan and just keep the shroud off , you will get good temps - open air setting temps @ 50-60c

So you want to buy one or not ?

If one of my fans die I may have a spare.

Shipping from the UK so where are you located ?

PM me if interested !

Yes I want to buy one. I may as well give it a try. If for some mysterious reason the PCB is different than the reference design then I may be out a few coins. I did a Google image search and the HD-587X-ZNFC is apparently a reference design VERSION 2.0. The version 1.0 reference cooler should work with some minor modifications (like cutting holes in the intake vents at the back to fit the PCIe power sockets (the v2.0 has them on the end of the card, version 1.0 has them at the top).

I'm located in Canada.

I'll PM you in max 1 hour...gotta get home.

OK. Good.

I am just hoping that one of my fans die again so I can have the reference cooler ready for you.

PM and also mention price and if you need further info about me and feedback etc.

Thanks !

Yeah I could do that but since the XFX fan is located in the middle I think what would end up happening is one side (right side) would end up much hotter cause of the way the turbine works (especially without a shroud).

You want to keep the shroud on, it creates a tunnel effect to blow the hot air out the back of you PC at an accelerated rate. Try replacing  thermal pads and paste. Also, I have 120mm fans mounted in the front of mine to blow even more air through them and a 40mm fan mounted on the top exhaust port sucking air out. I lost around 20° C on my exterior cards and 15° C on my interior cards. Just make sure when you add fans to a cased PC that you create a nice flow through the case otherwise you wont accomplish anything.

More fans does not mean cooler temps

it really all depends on your situation but if you have open air with proper cooling shroudless is cooler.

for instance I have a rig that has 5 reference 5870s in it, 2 of the 5870s have the shrouds off because I bought replacement fans for it that were just slightly too big

this rig is open air with plenty of cooling (open window in winter/ac in summer)

the two 5870s with no shrouds are running cooler than the other 3 5870s with the shrouds intact

and I can prove it!
this is fresh data from that rig

GPU 0 and 1 are the ones without the shrouds, I have all fans at 50% and as you can see they are running much cooler - of course if you had these packed inside of a case you would have a different story all together but then again you would never be able to pack 5 5870s inside a case to begin with

I just learned that I won't be able to put a reference cooler on the XFX card has a board that is a bit shorter than the reference design. So what I did was I swapped the cards around - put the XFX one with the non reference cooler below the card with the reference cooler. I then set the fan speed of the top card a bit higher than what I had it set to before (it's now at 65% whereas before it was at 55%) and  then I set the fan speed of the XFX card to 70%. So far I'm getting the following temps:

Adapter 0 - ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
            Sensor 0: Temperature - 63.00 C

Adapter 1 - ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
            Sensor 0: Temperature - 65.00 C

The XFX card is Adapter 1. It's running by 9-10 degrees cooler than it was before when it was the top card.

Note: I have two 120mm fans in the front of the case drawing air, but admittedly there is a mess of wires (PCIe cables) and 1 HD in the way, but that should not obstruct airflow _THAT_ much.

Bottom line is in my opinion the XFX non reference cooler is worst. It is quieter but cooling performance wise it is by far worse than the reference turbine based cooler.
