It was actually leet for both 1337 & 1338. I saw both the numbers and leet by refreshing my profile page

AFAIK, Satoshi built this forum and then handed over to Theymos. So this little easter egg maybe an injection of Satoshi too. Probably Theymos can confirm

That is kind of hard... because it is open source. If it was there, it would have been found within this 5 years ...I guess.

I've been around for not too much and have noticed it before. For non-link clickers, leet (or 1337) means "elite." I can;t say anything about who created the easter egg, though.
