Have it so that when you hover your cursor over the title of the topic a box appears with a preview of the contents of the post.

I'm not sure if this feature existed in the past and has since been removed, but it is potentially useful to get a bit of information on the topic before clicking into it.

Of course such a feature could potentially reduce impressions on a topic, should people use the information to not click into the topic.

It may be the case that this isn't possible as the contents of the topic is only loaded up when clicking into it.

If it is possible then it may be worth a trial?

Or implement software that automatically shortens text and then display's it in a hover box, although that would mean a very complicated piece of software i'm afraid.

Do you mean like a summarising tool? If so then that requires an intelligent solution, plus it would need to deal with multiple languages and words that aren't spelled correctly. This isn't feasible.

Just the first 150 characters might be sufficient.

It's okay, it's good to put ideas out there. I didn't mean to shoot it down, the AI that you're referring to is very interesting but I don't think that it would cope very well with the content that this forum deals with, however it has proven to be very effective in summarising newspaper articles.

I think that just a snippet of the start of the topic might give us that bit more information on the topic before clicking into it. It's not a massive feature as you might as well as click into the topic to read the first few lines anyway, but if it is something that is easy to enable then it might be worth a trial.

Yeah, I like this idea. It's good for a couple of things. Sometimes threads could have a really great or interesting title and then a really crappy op which you won't even want to bother replying to. Also, it'd be good for checking suspicious spam posts as you can just hover over them without actually having to waste time going in to check.

Isn't there some open-source tool somewhere that does just that (summarizes text/news articles)?

Probably, but is it necessary? Surely it would need to be precomputed and stored, altered if the topic content changes etc. Also I'm not sure how it would handle some of the lexicon on this forum - though that could be trialled. Maybe there is a learning aspect to it.

That solution would be at the higher end of the spectrum, the original suggestion is simple and will give some information that may prove to be useful at a glance.
