Is there a reference fan style heatsink that fits the v2 5870. I just got one with the dual fans and it runs around 90c.

Arctic Cooling's Accelero Xtreme 5870 might be a good option:

According to the third post on this page, it works fine, other than having to cut one of the RAM sinks before installing it.

Good luck!

Is there a repository out there that reviews aftermarket coolers and their size re: card space on something like the 790fx/890fx MSI boards that are popular?

The one I have is just like the Accelero, and its a piece of junk. The mouse wheel type fans are the way to go with mining bitcoins.

You can just pull the shroud off, cut the closed oem sinks so they look like normal ones at the top and install your own fans. Hurts the resale on the cards though.

I was hoping to buy a stock heatsink from someone who used a waterblock. But it's unclear if it will fit even with modifications.

The one I have looks just like the one in the pic. It's visiontek. I would say it will not fit the original stock heatsink. They may have a stock style heatsink designed to fit the v2 boards but its doubtful. I don't see what purpose they would have for doing that. Hard to say what's involved though, I don't see why they would change the original design in the first place. Anyone want to buy a 5870? It stays under a breezy 100c... Grin
