Mt. Gox operator mulls Bitcoin trademark sell-off
http://rt.com/business/161976-mtgox-sell-bitcoin-trademarks/

Quote
Tibanne, the holding company of collapsed bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, hopes to raise at least $1 million by selling its trademarks in Japan and the EU. The deal will include the bitcoins.com domain name and the word 'bitcoin'.

What the hell? Can they really trademark the word "bitcoin"?

They obviously can and did, but what annoys me is I believe their reasoning behind trademarking it was so somebody else didn't and use it for their own gain, now it seems it's just going to be sold to the highest bidder which could cause real problems.

Yes, at the time they (Mark) said it was for the good of the community to grab those TM's.
Always beware of people who claim to represent "the greater good" or say "this action will strengthen our collective fortune".
