I was wondering if it is possible to send and receive private messages, for instance, using some kind of supported API for bitcointalk? Or if I want to make a bot do I need to hack it together?

I'd like to see this available. It would make some services much easier. Maybe in the new forums?

I'm pretty sure that currently Bitcointalk doesn't offer any API.
However, the idea of having a bot sending/receiving PMs has been discussed before(can't seem to find the exact thread, but it was discussed a while back in Meta).
