5830 for $100 -- good price?
February 19, 2012, 03:24:51 AM
#1
I've recently become really interested in mining bitcoins, but I haven't got a lot of money to throw at things. I've never had a need for high(er) performance graphics cards before. So I've started looking around for a good bang-for-the-buck card or two. Is a used 5830 for $100 a good deal for mining?

I wouldn't know
A member who does may be around eventually
If I get the money, I may start some mining of my own.......

You're not by chance the same Mark Rose that used to be in Spitalfield, and the brother of Danny Rose who used to be in my choir group, are you?

He can thank us later for the bumps.
And to remain on topic, $100 for a 5830 isn't way out of the ballpark, especially if it's in good shape. It's slightly on the higher end, but it gets good hash power for the money whether you find it at $100 or $80.

Nope. Though there are over 400 Mark Roses in Canada alone, and no doubt thousands in other countries.

I'm pleased with the activeness of this forum.
I see one advertised on my local craigslist for $100... but I think it was also advertised for $120 a month ago and didn't sell (the seller is in the same general location). I might offer $80.
I may have to buy a bigger case, too, now that I think about it.

I've seen people cut out pieces of their case where it was getting in the way of GPU installation. Beating the useless metal to bend it out of the way works too
You could also try a caseless rig, but my Coolermaster case keeps my cards cooler than with the case off.

5830s are worth around 100 now
I bought mine for 120 in August, bought two more last month for 70, but the value has gone back up

Well, my case is pretty tight. The motherboard actually goes behind the hard drives a bit (4x1TB RAID 5). I do want a new case anyway (it's a 10 year old case).

Good to know.
Currently I am using a GeForce GT 430 (it drives my dual 1080's fine).
I also tried using a 5450 as a desktop card, but I got tired of it locking up every day. Hardly worth mining with though.
And my CPU is an Athlon II X4 640. I could probably overclock it, but I haven't had a need to.

NO. Not at all. 60 bucks or so I would consider a "good deal"
I buy and sell GPUs, most 5850s and 7970s.

5830 is one of the more inefficient cards as far as watts per megahash. 5870s are amongst the best, iirc. That hardware comparison is pure gold for picking cards, but discard all the outliers.

Yes, but it also has one of the best hash/dollar values.

how did you calculated this? mine 5830 does the job in 240-266Mhash range (depends of season heh). Running onto the poor 400W power supply with BIG headroom... So I couldnt say that this is inefficiently.

You need to find out the wattage of the graphics card (GPU-Z or multimeter) or the computer at the plug, then you divide your hash rate by watts, then you achieve MH/W. Getting a graphics card that cheap to bitcoin mine may not be a bad idea, but do not forget computer hardware depreciates over time, so selling it in the future when it further depreciates may not be as profitable as investing into hardware that is more valuable and powerful as now. This is just the line of thinking I follow in order to achieve the most profit over a period of time.
