I'm not going to embrace Cryptonight ASICs because such a thing is pure stupidity from a design perspective (useless added cost and complexity and poor verification time, and increased DoS vulnerability).

If we embrace ASICs it will be with a sensible ASIC-friendly algorithm. The only reason to make the tradeoffs Cryptonight does is "egalitarian mining"

What Asic friendly algorithm would you suggest, if the community decided that it wanted to embrace Asics?

I reckon it might be critical for Aeon's growth to be a more secure cryptocoin via hashrate. At least we can promote it as a more secure option than some of the top 50 cryptocoins hehehe.

I support this. This is the only way to go forward, I reckon.

Also, the only people who will be against this proposal are the GPU mining farm owners who will be the first people to leave Aeon when they see another more profitable coin to mine.

@smooth. What is your position on the proposal?

@smooth. What is your position on the proposal?

I'm neutral and I will support either continuing to tag along with Monero's anti-ASIC strategy or ASIC-friendly and low-overhead algorithm such as SHA-3.

I don't support ASICs on cryptonight nor arbitrary changes to this or that algorithm with no useful properties of its own but intended to give temporary advantage to GPU miners for some limited period after a switch.

Isn't that all of the modifications to cryptonight so far in a nutshell?

However, in your own personal position, what would be the best way forward for Aeon's growth as a secure and usable cryptocoin to compete in acceptance and payments versus bigger coins like litecoin?

I reckon, personally, we might have stayed in the no Asics strategy long enough.

Yes and no. Monero's stated policy is to tweak the algorithm to break existing ASICs and deter new new ones, which would fit within what I said, in doing little other than creating a temporary advantage. I don't think that's a good approach for AEON in part because the frequent forks are a burden on limited developer resources, more likely to result in a screwup due to limited resources, fewer eyeballs on the code, etc.

The first tweak (variant 1) did only that, and did not even attempt to improve the ASIC-resistance in any fundamental way. The second and third (third being CN-R) tweaks actually attempt to improve ASIC-resistance to some degree and by some accounts (not really confirmed nor confirmable) have reduced the ASIC advantage, though not enough. RandomX attempt to reduce the advantage drastically and reduce the need for frequent forking. I do not know if it would or will be successful.

@smooth. I reckon Monero's stated policy is not a practical one. The threat of Monero's policy to tweak the mining algorithm did not stop new Asics from being produced or from the miners tweaking their Asics to work on the tweaked algorithm.

I reckon it might never end. How can a cryptocoin grow if it was not stable in that side of its development?
