Does anyone recommend a good parental control that comes with games and preapproved sites for children?

I don't get the game part. check out www.opendns.comyou can set the openDNS servers on the computer/device your kids will be using and it will filter out the categories you set. http://use.opendns.com/ |

How reliable is this in your experience?
As for the games, I wanted something for my kid to play with while is in the computer, most games are for grownups nowadays...

How reliable is this in your experience?
As for the games, I wanted something for my kid to play with while is in the computer, most games are for grownups nowadays...
opendns.com is pretty reliable. it might not block 100% of the sites, but nothing does. |

I looked for "browsers for kids" and "software for kids" and a couple of hits interested me. One of them was Kidzui and the other was Magic Desktop 8. Do you have any experience with these? They look exceptionally great, I was wondering if these work as good as they look.

Why not get some console or handheld for games? you can select the games  There are tons of pc games and toys like http://tuxpaint.org/As for the internet, I don't think a 5 year old is very interested in that. Maybe youtube or wikipedia |

nope, sorry. not sure if you gave up on opendns or not, but i would recommend reading more info on their site. after doing a quick search on kidzui it appears to be a browser that needs to be used. that might work, but if your kid accidentally opens another browser, it looks like they will be able to view un-filtered content. the nice thing about opendns is that it is free and you can configure ipads, iphones, etc...to use the free service, as well. http://blog.opendns.com/2010/06/23/i...ntal-controls/ |

You are right about Kidzui, I need to be around for my kid to use it. The other one, Magic Desktop, not really. I picked up a trial at their site here: http://www.magicdesktop.com/Turns out, it is a full suite, not just the browser. Furthermore, the browser uses a content advisor, so filtering (which personally concerns me as it is not 100% reliable) is not the preferred method. This basically provides a huge list of sites for kids so I don't have to worry about these being inadequate. It also blocks Ads from linking to other pages. All it required is that I setup a password and not only the browser is protected, pretty much everything in Windows is. Still exploring, however. Don't have a full picture of what this thing can do yet. |

I did. Don't think it serves my purposes. I am inclined to use something that effectively and assuredly blocks 100% of websites that are unsuitable to my child (which it does, this is not open to interpretation, I assure you) rather than OpenDNS, which just feels like a gamble to me. I don't think any of these solutions are child friendly. Magic Desktop is. |

Why not just explain to them the difference between reality and a game or what's on a screen so they can use them without any problems rather than desperately try to control what they can and can't look at all the time?
Children are not as stupid as people would have you believe.

what makes you think openDNS won't block 100% of sites? nothing will block 100%
i have been using openDNS for years, many networks that i have implemented this on have pornography blocked and i have yet to see an adult site that wasn't blocked and let through the filter. with any content filtering system, mistakes will be made and sites can get mis-categorized.
did you actually try openDNS and have it fail you? maybe you didn't set it up properly?

I use openDNS at work, it works fine, but as Sana said, nothing will block 100%. These content control engines rely on the data these pages produce and it won't be 100%, that's a guarantee. They will be good, but nothing will be perfect, regardless of product.
It would be 100% if you were doing this stuff with your kid and not using the internet as a babysitter. No matter how good a filter is, there's zero chance I would trust it with my 5 year old.

That's what I've been telling you guys, the difference is that this thing I'm using is not a filtering system. it's a content advisor. All sites that are available to be used are for children. Everything else is blocked. There is no address bar or search engine to be found here. That's the reason why I find it more reliable than Open DNS

it isn't that it is more reliable than openDNS, it seems that it doesn't do what you want it to do.
openDNS is very reliable when it comes to filtering websites. i guess i misunderstood your questions. i took it as you were looking for something that would block porn/other content you didnt want your kids to have access to.

your kid is still going to find out stuff eventually, I mean why should you try to block access to all sorts of websites
if he's a good kid he probably won't have any interest in those sites
interest will come naturally as he grows older, there is no point in blocking it..
