^^^ The explosion happened in Poltava Oblast, which is currently under the occupation of Right Sector. It is a no-brainer actually, on who is responsible for the pipeline blast. At the time of explosion, the gas pressure was around 50-52 atmos. It is a miracle that large scale human casualties and economic damage were avoided.

First of all, Ukraine can pay up the debt and agree to the EU-brokered deal of 385.
Second, South-Eastern countries should stop following the directives from Brussels (after conducting talks with Kerry) and shooting themselves in the foot by not wishing to conclude the South Stream.

According to Gazprom, it has stopped supplying gas to Ukraine. But everyone knows that the Ukrainians are currently stealing the gas which is destined for the European Union and other non-EU eastern European nations.  Grin

Ukraine also used the time after the first partial debt payment, when gas stop was postponed to continued to pump in gas into their reservoirs using maximum flow.

Ukraine / Naftogaz does not have large gas storage facilities, such as the Etzel facility in Germany and Tarsus in Turkey. The current reserves will run out before the winter, when they need the maximum amount of gas.

I found this really well-written analysis that puts gas into the context of the ongoing war:
http://futuristrendcast.wordpress.com/2014/06/14/gas-wars-why-is-ukraine-refusing-to-pay-for-russian-gas/

Here is a short excerpt:
Quote
...

The only possible reason Yatsenyuk, Poroshenko, and Co. would be so arrogant and audacious is because they have received direct assurances from the US that it will be behind them 100%. The infamous #neocon Victoria #Nuland just visited Kiev. She didn’t bring any burgers and cookies for maidan this time, but she brought something else – direct orders.

The goals of Nuland’s visit were as follows:

1. To give orders to use phosphorus bombs in eastern Ukraine. Read Lada Ray’s Warning: Phosphorus Bombing of Slavyansk and Ukraine APCs Breach Russian Border

2. To give the green light to the Russian border provocation via Ukraine APCs. See the same article. Also read related:  Ukraine Part 6. Striking Geopolitical Similarities: Georgian War – Beijing2008 and Ukraine – Sochi2014. and Predictions page.

3. To sabotage gas price negotiations at any cost, which in the end will hurt both Russia and EU! Watch report: Gazprom sets last gas payment deadline for Ukraine.

Ukraine PM #Yatsenyuk gave order to all his underlings to prepare for the gas shut-off on Monday – the last deadline given by Russia for past due payment (4 deadlines have already gone by). Yatsenyuk and Poroshenko would rather have the entire country be without gas than agree on something reasonable with Russia.

Here is why.

1. They received a direct order from the Washington HQ to destabilize Russia and Europe, and to drive a wedge between them.

2. They desperately need to paint Russia as a villain who turned off the gas to the poor Ukrainian citizens, so later they can say that Russia is to blame for the economic collapse of the Ukraine. In reality, the collapse has been underway for the past 23 years

I've written an English translation of an article, giving detailed account of all three gas wars:

PS: read this article, quite enlightening:

Right, Europe insists on shooting itself in the foot. Even though the South Stream agreement was signed with Austria yesterday, the EU commissioner demands freeze of the construction of the South Stream:
http://lenta.ru/news/2014/06/25/south/

Interestingly, Miller promised yesterday, that Europe (at least the Northern part) will get their gas supplied in full despite sabotage by Ukraine, by increase in the flow in Yamal and North Stream pipelines.

By the way, The Supreme Court of Ukraine cleared Timoshenko of all charges, saying that the gas contract ($485 per thousand cubic) that she signed with Gazprom back in 2005 is not criminal or wrong. In other words, Ukraine said that the price that they are declining now is too low.  Grin

Seems like the EU is split on new sanctions on Russia.

Countries favoring new sanctions: Britain, France, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Countries opposing new sanctions: Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Malta.

Ukraine cheats again with gas!

While Ukraine is saying that they receive reverse gas from Europe, they in fact installed a short by-pass pipe, circumventing the counter, and are pumping Russian gas that is supposed to get to Europe:

http://ria.ru/economy/20140701/1014327891.html

Hungary refuses to stop construction of South stream:
http://lenta.ru/news/2014/07/01/hungary/

PM Orban said that those who say that Hungary should refuse building South Stream, should at the same time tell Hungary how it is supposed to live without energy.

Nope. It would be more like if the cable to your house went through your neighbour's house, and the neighbour didn't pay the bill and then tempered with the cable, the supplier cuts the supply. At the same time the supplier tries to build another cable to your house (South Stream), yet your neighbour goes to the police (US) and says that he does not want you to have that alternative line. At which point, the police (US), goes to you (Europe) and blackmails you into stopping construction of a bypass line.

In the meantime, Ukraine finished the round of tenders to receive reverse gas from Europe through Slovakia:
http://ria.ru/world/20140702/1014483835.html

Just  a reminder that Slovakia (or Ukraine) will have to build a separate pipeline to Ukraine to send the reverse gas, as it is not allowed to syphon off gas from the pipe that goes to Europe (but is doing it anyway)

Ukraine continues to refuse to pay for gas (let alone the debt), even though the contract, signed by Timoshenko's government was acknowledged as legal by Ukrainian Supreme Court. Medvedev estimates that a full-scale energy crisis awaits Ukraine, close to the autumn:

An interesting bit of news. This might be the thing needed to save Ukraine economically (and might have been planned from the start of the Maidan "unrests"), but a complete change of the political leadership of Ukraine and warcrime trials must come first.

US and Germany want gas hub in Ukraine - Naftogaz director

Ukrainian Ministry of Finance found 8 alternatives to Russian gas, including biodiesel and synthetic gas.
Another alternative is building an LNG, where Ukraine will receive gas at a market price of $380, though the question of who will deliver the gas is not decided (reminding that Russia, after mediating from EU, was offering a price of $385)

Daily mail is funny sometimes
UKRAINIAN ASTRONOMERS NAME STAR 'PUTIN IS A D***HEAD'

Ukrainian astronomers have named a star 'Putin is a D**khead' in a jibe aimed at the hated Russian president.

The star was adopted and named through the Pale Blue Dot Project, which allows anyone to adopt and name a star for just $10, with the money going to fund the hunt for Earth-like planets.

The co-ordinates of star which is officially named 'Putin Huilo' are: Celestial Star: right Ascension: 18 h 59 m 47.09 s Slope: 46 * 26 '44', 'magnitude: 11.

The term Putin Huilo is belived to have been coined by football fans and was widely chanted at matches, before being picked up by rock bands and becoming a popular internet meme.

It was widely shouted during the Maidan protest in Kiev which resulted in the ousting of President Yanukovych and his government

This will never be a feasible option. Because:

1. Gas prices are around $400 / K Cu M in Slovakia. Reverse gas will be even more expensive, when compared to the rate of $380 per K Cu M offered by Russia to Ukraine.

2. The Yamal and Nord Stream pipelines will run out of spare capacity in winter, when gas is needed the most.

And the final goal of the Ukraine coup is within reach:

Ukraine makes first step to let EU, US co-manage national gas pipes
http://rt.com/business/170436-ukraine-pipes-eu-us/

Quote
The Ukrainian parliament has passed the first reading of a bill allowing western companies to own up to 49 percent of the national gas transportation system (GTS), which is currently totally owned by Naftogaz Ukraine.

The 229 - 221 Friday vote means a foreign operator will be able to manage, be licensed to operate, or lease Ukraine’s gas pipelines or its underground storage, RIA reports.

On top of that, the Ukrainian government can set up a separate operator for the underground gas storage, where US and European companies could also get a 49 percent stake.

...

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who proposed the bill, said it was a part of a bigger initiative to modernize Ukraine’s GTS and also strengthen Ukraine’s position as a transit country.

“Those who want to turn Ukraine’s pipes into scrap, play along with Russia in construction of South Stream, those don’t vote for the bill,” Yatsenyuk said on Thursday when the bill was first turned down

And some astute reader comments:

Quote
Mr Chuck 07.07.2014 10:04
Yats must be getting very wealthy getting backhanders from all these big western players who he is helping rape Ukraines infrastructure.

W.J. van der Meer 07.07.2014 09:24
I am afraid Gazprom will shut off the gas supplies to Ukraine as soon as the South Stream is completed, making this project obsolete.
