The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Also, if private keys are passwords, how do you prevent brute forcing/hacking of accounts?  Huh

Private-keys aren't passwords. Private-keys are just password-protected inside your wallet.
In most Brainwallets private keys are passwords (hashed versions of it anyway)

Okay, so if somepony has got my password, they don't have access to my account since they don't got the keys?  Huh

They need your wallet file and your password to access your account.

Extract the key out of the wallet. There is still a key it's just stored inside an encrypted file.

v0.6.42 standalone.

Have same message, curious, did message reached voice of NEM correctly.

prob just a bug in NCC.

It's a bug in NCC. It'll be fixed next release.

All messages for the contest having been arriving just fine and all have been readable.

Is there somebody close to the right answer? Smiley

Unique to NEM, warm wallet = exposed to internet, but need another key to sign off, which can be connected off or online.
I actually don't like that term "warm". If you are talking about multisig: If the cosigner account is cold, then the multisig account is exactly as safe as a non-multisig cold wallet. If the cosigner account is hot, then the multisig account is exactly as safe as a non-multisig hot wallet.

Co-signer can be switching off and online in another machine along with the counterpart cosigner who is also switching on and off. How do you define this? Not hot and not cold?
When a computer, that holds the priv key (wallet) of a cosigner, goes online, then the wallet is no longer cold with my definition (yes, I have a very strict definition about a "cold wallet"). So switching it offline again, doesnt make it cold again, it stays hot, because malware could have already sent the wallet to a server and keylogged the password, theoretically.

@b1007

You are asking a lot of very basic questions. I think this thread is not the place to deal with questions like that in detail. Please read our tutorials: http://blog.nem.io/nem-tutorial-list/ and ask detailed questions at the NEM forum: https://forum.nem.io/

Thanks for helping me out, so a key is that a file you can back-up or is it just a password? If you make a back-up of your wallet do you automatically have a back-up of your key as well? Since you talk about printing your key I presume it's just a password?  Huh Also you have NCC and NIS wallet, but you only need NIS if you want to harvest am I correct?

So many noob questions but I really want to understand what this project is all about, I hope the project becomes more userfriendly and simple in time...

Also how can you print a key? it doesn't make sense to me if a key is a computerfile inside the wallet  Huh

Okay, so some basic crypto info here.  I private key is kind of like a password, but more than a password.  It is basically a password and an account number all in one (that isn't exactly true, but it is easy to think of it that way).  Basically think of a private key as a seed to an account.

In NEM we use wallet files.  A wallet can hold as many accounts as you want, and each account will of course be operated by its private key.  You can back up the wallet as I mentioned earlier, or you can back up the private key for an account.

To back up a key, you can click on the settings wheel, click on View Account Details, then click on Show Account's Private key.  You can then copy and paste this key.  You can print it or put it in a world file and encrypt it, or try to back it up some other way.  As long as you have this key, you can restore your account.

If you look at your key, you will notice that it is very long and random looking.  It is like this for a reason.  It would basically take all the computers in the world thousands of years to guess your key.  As long as you don't lose that key or allow somebody to access it, your funds are completely safe.

Anybody knows when asset exchange going to come out?
Well I guess we need assets (mosaics) first^^ Mosaics are working already pretty well on testnet and I guess it won't take too long until we have mosaics on real net.

Seriously this is just silly, stay focused on developing the NEM project technically and people will want to buy XEM themselves, no need for these silly games...It's NEM unworthy...No more freebies, it sounds cheap, I am sure if the tech is right, more people will join the network... Wink
There will always be people who like and dislike stuff. If you don't like Sound of NEM then just don't play.
In my opinion something like Sound of NEM cannot harm the project, but it might create awareness, which is needed to make the great tech of NEM known at all.

Btw: No dev was involved in Sound of NEM of course. So there is no reason to believe the tech development was slowed down by this game. Just in case you were trying to say that...

Hmm okay I thought this was a DEV project  Cheesy

Sound of NEM game was thought of and mostly made up by Microove who is a community member and not a dev.  It was funded through private donations from NEMsters.  Mixmaster and I, who are on the core marketing team have helped Microove out with some of the final details so he can see this project realized.  I think he has done a great job working out the details and making the videos myself.

Meanwhile the devs have been very busy developing.  They have a NEM experimental network of Mijin going at 100 tx/s.  Yes, 100 tx/s.  Mosaics and Namespaces are just about to released on the public NEM testnet for anybody to test.  More information about that will come out soon.

Thanks Jabo, I think NEM devs are the best devs in crypto town, however the wallet is still too complex. Can you tell me how I can make a back up of my wallet? I mean the NEM wallet operates online or are my coins secure on cold storage on my harddrive? I know these are noob questions, but it's still not quite clear to me...

Blockstream has a pretty good team of amazing devs too, but they have to build on Bitcoin, a code which while being groundbreaking is far more limited in what it can actually do than the base code of NEM.  The NEM devs built a platform from scratch that is making it very easy for them to adapt it.

Bitcoin has way more destinations and passengers then NEM right now, but NEM devs have built a way better rail and train system. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
