There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Is it still down? This is bordering on ridiculous. I thought there was supposed to be a pretty straighforward way to recognize and reject the tainted coins while still letting the other coins through.

What I expected is that when the hack money was reimbursed yesterday (at 0.81$) people would be buying back their Xem's at current low price (0.54$). Anyone has a clue why this did not happen?

I think the mood on the XEM platform will change as soon as we see some failure after a long recession, with a drop in the price of bitcoin.

Coincheck Clients Withdraw $372 Million; NEM Theft Refunds are Coming
Advertisement

Get Trading Recommendations and Read Analysis on Hacked.com for just $39 per month.

After removing a temporary freeze on withdrawals today, Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck said it has completed transfers worth 40.1 billion JPY ($372 million) in withdrawal requests by customers.

Weeks after suffering the ignominy of being the victim of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency theft, ever, Coincheck has kept its promise to lift the temporary suspension on customers’ JPY funds by processing withdrawal transfers today.

In an announcement today, the exchange operator said:

“[W]e have restarted operations for withdrawals of JPY. As of today, we have completed transfers for all withdrawal requests made by 3 pm on the 11th of this month (around 40.1 billion JPY).”

It has been a busy Tuesday for the exchange operator, first filing a report with Japans’ financial regulator as a response to the latter’s business improvement order on the same day. In it, Coincheck outlined details of its investigation surrounding the theft of the stolen NEM, installing proper support channels to customers, strengthening its cybersecurity posture to manage system risks and introduce new measures to prevent a similar theft in the future.

While lifting the temporary ban on withdrawals of fiat yen deposits, Coincheck hasn’t revealed any specific dates for withdrawals of customers’ cryptocurrency holdings at the exchange. The exchange is reportedly switching to more secure accounts for some cryptocurrency holdings. Crypto withdrawals will only resume after the exchange determines a secure management system, the Nikkei reports. Offline storage (cold wallet storage) of cryptocurrencies is the likely way forward.

The exchange wrote:

“We are continuing to confirm and improve the security of our systems in order to resume transfers of other cryptocurrencies and begin reparation payments as soon as possible.”

In a dramatic press conference on January 26, Coincheck executives confirmed widespread rumors of the theft of 526 million NEM tokens, worth a massive $530 million at the time. Less than three weeks later, the embattled exchange is staging a quick recovery amid its promise of reimbursing 260,000 NEM holders who were victims of the hack.

As reported by local Bloomberg reporter Yuji Nakamura, Coincheck will focus on compensating losses suffered by NEM holders before resuming cryptocurrency withdrawals. More pertinently, the reporter adds Coincheck has the necessary funds to repay customers losses, with a date for compensation to be revealed soon.

My guess is as soon as everybody receives their reimbursement, the first thing they will do is gtfo out of coincheck. Its what i would do. Cash withdrawals have been enabled but crypto isnt yet so it make sense to move to another exchange if you intend to re-buy NEM which will take some time

That stupid exchange hack couldn't have come at a worse time.
It seems like confidence in nem is at an all time low with an absolutely pathetic trade volume of 22 million. that's awful. There's coins ranked below 200 with that kind of volume.

I'm thinking we missed the boat with that last meteoric rise. There will be no wechat news or anything else to bump us up back to that level again. Barring some kind of major announcement/change we run a very real risk of slipping down into those 3bn marketcap coins, somewhere down past the 15s or 20s.

the volume is always low for NEM nothing to worry about. And you have to think about the Exchanges dealing with the stolen coins so quite normal right now I think.

It´s just getting some traction. The Exchange should soon launch and catapult will be a game changer.  More than happy with NEM right now.

Coincheck hack was a setback.  Hard to really know how that affected XEM's favor in Japan, may have turned lots of people off from NEM.

Either way, IMO this will be temporary as the NEM platform is still solid and interest will continue to grow in 2018.

I dont think it had much impact at all, as XEM went back to $1 the next day.
All markets have since crashed, and has nothing to do with the coincheck hack.

Yeah, it's been up for a few days. They just never communicated properly when it was up, hence the confusion.

Slipping to 12th on CMC now, not great. Thinking about reallocating some of my NEM...not sure where though.

The lack of marketing here is getting to be very frustrating.

What lack of marketing?

Meetups are currently held globally on a regular basis.
Even in New Zealand we have meetups across the country, I have not seen any such meetups held in my town for any other competition.

Push towards Middle East and South America

"These are powerful individuals that have the capacity to shift public sentiment towards NEM.
If they pull off this meeting successfully, you can be sure that this crypto will have wide scale adoption,
especially by UAE corporations, and in the process pushing up its value by a significant margin."

They´re doing great job but they focus on real-world use cases and audience not just crypto scene. If you don´t believe in the project on long term you should just sell and buy some hype coin like Tron.

Are you talking about this one https://bestrate.org/?
It says that it's an agregator? Does it mean that it like an "mediator" between exchange platforms and customers? Huh

Yea, I also saw like a few positive references about BestRate.org and now I'm looking for a reason to check it out! Grin
