Logo

Initial Base: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=660544.msg7665000#msg7665000

Requirements:
  • "BM"
  • purple (#330066 - or variation of)
  • circular background
  • white symbol
  • the single currency line on left and double on the right

Since then mymenace has kindly provided three variations:

I am very happy with all three, and feel each has a use.

mymenace: perhaps it would be nice to have a mono (black and white) version of 1 and 2. Regarding three I feel like the outer "bitmark" text should be aligned with the central logo, do you agree?

allow: it would be nice to spread the work load you obviously have good design skills, we need the equivalent of this logo for the website, document headers, and so forth. Would it be okay if I asked you put any efforts you are willing to contribute in this direction, using 1 or 2 above with some nice "Bitmark" or "Project Bitmark" text to the right of it.

For the testnet logo we need an alternative color, I very quickly autobalanced the original logo to create this, perhaps an alternative color would be more suitable, what do you both think?

Soon, we will also need to consider a design for the website, and also a domain for the project.

Thank you very much for your valuable contributions, they are very appreciated.

Branding Update
Over the next 24 hours we will be creating a new repo on github for branding and artwork. Mymenace has kindly offered to make the aforementioned changes and commit low and hi res art work to the new repo for other contributors to use and adapt as needed.

I think logo number 2 is the best one out of the three. Are you going to be choosing one as an official logo or something, and keep the others for side uses?

Yes, one must be set as the main icon and logo for Bitmark, the others can be used in media, on the website, side uses as you say.

Number 2 is also my favourite.

Whichever we use must be recognisable and distinct at a small size (18 or 36px), and when used as an icon or in a button... "Pay with Bitmark". If we consider this from the start, it will save us problems later.

What will the mining algo be? Isnt Scrypt PoW a lil outdated?

Scrypt, yes. Outdated not at all, perhaps mature and well supported are more descriptive of the algorithm. Remember "Our aim is to create a relatively stable, user focussed, crypto currency which refines and implements maturing innovations from the crypto currency sector" ... "no hype or gimmicks, just a project which focusses on becoming a stable every day currency".

Rationale from https://github.com/project-bitmark/bitmark/wiki#proof-of-work : """Scrypt. A well balanced proof of work algorithm which is widely supported and for which hardware support is maturing. Large investment has been made by the mining community, and continues to be made. Whilst there are benefits to both Proof of Stake and multiple algorithm approaches, we feel that Scrypt PoW and the balanced coin release schedule which can be achieved with long term block rewards is the most suitable for this long term project. With an abundance of mining hardware available already it should also ensure a healthy network from the start."""

Has scrypt been proven to do the job we require? Yes.
Is scrypt broadly supported? Yes.

We don't want to reinvent the wheel here, rather we want to ensure the wheel is smooth, well oiled, and stable... fit for purpose.

Thanks for your question danny, and please do review and question further, all input is most welcome.

Thank you for your reply, you got your point there and I respect it. There is nothing wrong with Scrypt and surely is widely supported, but as a miner what I dont like about the algo is the high temperatures and high energy consumption.

Thank you also.

Do you mine with GPU or ASICs? As a miner which algorithm(s) do you prefer, and why?

I mine with GPUs and I prefer mining X11, X13 or maybe Keccak. Although if the project is solid I have no problem going along with Scrypt. Is this coin oriented toward ASIC mining for strong network from the begining? If not I would suggest Scrypt-N or maybe Scrypt OG variant to avoid rapid centralization with ASICs.

Anyway the project looks very tempting. I also like the name (Bitmark). Ill be watching it closely.

Again thank you, and glad you like the name Smiley

One final question if you do not mind: would you, as a GPU miner, consider mining a coin (Bitmark) which has limited value to start, and which may take months to earn a value legitimately? Or put another way, would you be happy to mine it along the way, knowing that you may not see a return for some time, with the offset that it potentially has stronger value in the future?

Glad you dropped in to contribute to the discussion.

Update - Art of Bitmark

Thanks to mymenace we now have all logo variations and branding guidelines available in the Art of Bitmark repo. I'd like to thank mymenace for his concerted effort in creating high quality logos, alternatives, and providing a very professional service.

Special thanks also to Allow for his valuable input throughout the process, and contributions to Bitmark Core's design.

As the project progresses we hope designers and artists of all kinds will contribute to both the design of Bitmark resources, and share Bitmark related artwork of all styles. Full accreditation will be added to the repository, and on the website (when we have one).

Update - Pfennig and Bitmark

I am gitian building the project and testing on 32/64 bit versions of various windows versions, and the same for various linux distributions.

If anybody can build for os-x, or even better upload a tar'd version of the osx sdk so I can cross compile all releases on demand, or link to one already online, it would be greatly appreciated.

Update - Help?
Within the next hour I will have Linux and Windows 32bit and 64bit builds of Bitmark/Pfennig available for testing on a temporary block chain.

I'm looking for a couple of people with either linux or windows to spend a short time installing, sending a few transactions, generally testing, then uninstalling.

Is anybody willing to help? If so please PM me.

Thank you.

edit: the pre-release is all compiled and ready to start testing, I am currently mining the first 720 temporary chain blocks whilst I sleep so there is a balance to test with tomorrow. I will post link to the pre-release tomorrow.

If your going to use an asic driven algo why not sha-256 then?  I don't think anyone with gpu's is excited about scrypt, so it's hard to say using it would be done with gpu's in mind.  If you want to go that route sha-256 can be mined with gpus too.

I'd be a bit worried about someone running a >50% attack since people have massive farms that they use for Bitcoin already. Not that it's not a concern for Scrypt, but I don't think people have the same level of hashing power yet.

I personally dont see a problem with hoard/hodl and pump, dump, it just us humans don't like the time frame they happen on.

market adoption at least at the retail level or tipping does not seem to increase value.

Doge, and all the retail adoptions of BTC and their failure to impact price seem to demonstrate this.

We can but try, certainly there is enough scrypt hashing power to grow the strength of the network over time, without any barriers to adoption. Let us see how it goes.

There is more discussion on the wiki home page, and also here. Perhaps a balance is achievable that makes things work well.

The pre-release of Bitmark/Pfennig on TEMPORARY chains is available here cross compiled for windows and linux. You can find details on variables/ports on the wiki.

If you'd like to test installing / uninstalling feel free. To test functionality and get some test coins, or test miners against the build please let me know via pm and I'll give you an addnode and some test coins.

Thank you.

Update
  • On the funding thread we have had some interest and a preliminary offer towards our desperately needed (and small) budget
  • Bitmark/pfennig testing is underway thanks to some kind bitcointalk users. No reported faults and everything working as expected. Windows Vista/7/8 and various Linux distributions have now been tested.

If you'd like to help in any way, please get in touch.

  • Guriqbal Pandher has kindly donated 0.2 BTC (1/3rd of the budget needed!) to the project.
  • Bitmark/Pfennig Pre-Release testing has:
  • - been completed on windows vista 32+64bit, windows 7 32+64 bit, and windows 8 64bit
  • - been completed on linux, including ubuntu 10, 12 and 14
  • - successfully been run through TOR, we need to setup some onion addressed nodes to test further

Project Needs
  • A further 0.4 BTC total funding
  • Somebody to provide a copy of MacOSX10.7.sdk.tar.gz, the mac 10.7 SDK so I can cross compile binaries for osx
  • Somebody to test the client and daemon on fedora

The Bitmark/Pfennig pre-release can be found on Github.

Pfennig follows both the bitmark and bitcoin releases, as bitcoin is currently built and tested against 10.7 so is our project, when they migrate so will we. I'd rather keep Bitcoin's QA process behind our builds.

Consider this project as having two development streams which fuse together, our own under bitmark, and bitcoins. Each release of either Pfennig or Bitmark will correspond to a release of our own work, and a new tagged version of bitcoin.
