Read the news lately? Mintpal got hit. It's all over their announcements with several follow ups.
Long story short, they are doing a lot of manual withdrawing right now.

Its a much worse concern with POS coins, because all it takes is hitting an exchange or 2 and suddenly you have 51% or more of the coins available.
Without any POW to back that up... not so good.

VRC had to hard fork soft spork. Not to protect Mintpal, but to protect the network.
