Remember that many people aren't religious, and/or don't believe he actually did do such a thing; after all, it's not like the stories you read about it were written at the time that supposedly happened. So, maybe he wasn't a troll, but you could say his followers (at least the ones who wrote the books) were.
By calculating the gravitational effect of the earth, scientists have found out that the mean density of earth is 5.515 g/cm3. But the crustal density is only 2 g/cm3. That means that the interior of the earth is much denser than the outer layers.
Playing the devil's advocate here, that could just mean that relatively well distributed portions of the Earth were hollow, and the rest made up of a previously unknown denser material... yes, I know, I'm grasping at straws here.
