They are going to get themselves in trouble using city bus stops/terminals. I have seen similar challenges to services like this based only on the use of existing bus stops.

I think it will remain around since NYC is not able to provide a good bus service to all areas
Meaning that new markets emerge to handle those problems
That said with a city of that size it is nice to have alternative transportation methods and its rare to see someone put more than a days effort into an article he took so many trips that was quality work

More likely the licensed carriers also a victim of the whole scheme.

They need to recoup the license cost, and "playing" the game and kill off any unlicensed competitor is the only way.
