Update : added a second domain name for namecoin.bitcoin-contact.org : http://opennic.bit/

I seem to just timeout when trying to connect there, but I got tester.bit and darts.bit to work fine.  So is it a problem with the site or is my configuration off somewhere?, don't see why that name would be different.

gsan reports me that this ip was blocks for some of his servers... so, the problem shouldn't by on your side.
I guess i'll need to use another ip...

So, I'm trying to figure out how to host a .bit domain on my server. When I try mapping the domain directly to my server ip, and then try to  access the domain from a webbrowser, I still get "Server not found." Do I have to add the ip for this dns server to my server to host .bit domains?

You need to also set up your webserver to have the correct domain (including the .bit) as a virtual host to serve the pages to clients requesting via that Host name. There can also be issues with transparent proxies run by your ISP. An ISP at one location where I am refuses to serve up .bit domains as they sniff the HTTP traffic and do DNS lookups on the Host: line in the HTTP headers. This fails and the request dies.

Aren't virtual hosts just used if you have multiple domains that go to different directories? If you don't set up virtual hosts, shouldn't it  default to /var/www  directory?

A stupid update to get more than 500 domains (default in name_scan )...

If you don't find your new domain in name_scan, use 'name_scan "" 10000' (to list up to 10000 domains).
If you configured your new domain the right way, and my DNS server does not reply an ip for it, this should now work :p

Added ipv6 support !

Server is now usable with :
- ipv4 : 178.32.31.41
- ipv6 : 2001:41d0:2:a5d9::101

If you use the ipv6 as nameserver, let me now if it works or not :p

I've just released NamecoinToBind v2.0 (a php script that generates bind zones for .bit domains from the namecoin blockchain) and http://namecoin.bitcoin-contact.org has been updated to use it.

Quote
This is a full rewrite that, i hope, could manage a lot of domain changes Smiley (more modular)
It now supports the new domain spec features (not all yet)

More infos here : http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2203#p2203

ps : near 3000 domains are currently registered :p

My .bit DNS server has changed his hostnames to easier ones :
- http://dns.bit/
- http://dns.dot-bit.org/

He is still available at the same ip addresses :
- ipv4 : 178.32.31.41 (http://178.32.31.41)
- ipv6 : 2001:41d0:2:a5d9::101 (http://[2001:41d0:2:a5d9::101])

Looking forward to the GUI coming out and il reg a bunch of domains. Also trying to get another public DNS setup to add to the list.
Glad to know you try to build another DNS server, to add it on the list :p (http://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains#Replace_your_DNS_server_with_a_compatible_one)

Does this mean I'm using you for all my dns? I don't think I want that.

I'm on Ubuntu, using NetworkManager
If you don't want to use someone elses DNS server you can set up dnsmasq on ubuntu pretty easily to serve namecoin domains and fall back to your normal DNS. This approach uses a small program I wote to generate secondary hosts file for namecoin domains. Instructions here: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6017.msg97623#msg97623

Thanks for this.
