Been really busy with Viacoin !
But just pushed a few updates to the master branch for a new Viacoin version 0.10.11

This is not 0.13.2 (in development) but 0.10.11 contains a lot of security fixes. I also updated the Viacoin seeder with a security fix.

I will write about all of it later. It just has been a busy week.
Getting the old Viacoin to compile the window binaries was a pain since the source code was so old. So yeah I also updates Viacoin with newer versions of dependencies. (new Qt, Boost, Cache etc)

Fixes have been made to the Viacoin-Seeder


What is the Viacoin-seeder ?
============================

Viacoin-seeder is a crawler for the Viacoin network, which exposes a list
of reliable nodes via a built-in DNS server.

Features:
* regularly revisits known nodes to check their availability
* bans nodes after enough failures, or bad behaviour
* keeps statistics over (exponential) windows of 2 hours, 8 hours,
  1 day and 1 week, to base decisions on.
* very low memory (a few tens of megabytes) and cpu requirements.
* crawlers run in parallel (by default 24 threads simultaneously).

Fixes & Optimization
============================

1. The DNS parser of the Viacoin seeder was vulnerable to a dos attack.
A crafted DNS req could trigger infinite recursive function calls.
This exploit could lead to a stack overflow.

The vulnerability is fixed.
However I noticed a lot of Altcoins if not the majority that have seeders are vulnerabile.
Most altcoins use a seeder. Bad altcoins don't have seeders & you usually have to add nodes.

2. The protocol timeouts have adjusted to improve the seeder.
A commit has been made to avoid connecting to non valid ipv4 ranges.

3. a bug fix to fix negative responses.
Previously if the resolver was asked for a record it didn't have, it would return a response with a NS-record in the authority section.

4. Increase the TTL

5. Wait for more than 1 single address to respond

6. DNS will listen on ipv6 instead of ipv4

Today all the updates for Viacoin 0.13.2 got pushed to the Viafresh repository.
However as most of you know, merged mining is a task that requires another developer who is specialized in merged mining & familiar with 0.13.2&Segwit.

I found a developer who is able to do it for a decent payment.

Keep us posted on what the decision is moving forward with a dev & whether you are still shopping around. It's hard to say $5.1k is expensive because I don't know the amount of work/hourly cost that goes into this. What is the projected amount of hours/cost per hour that the $5.1k quote is providing?

I'd be more than happy to contribute at least .25 BTC to the fund assuming there is a game plan here and good people working on it.

I ran a background check on some who are significantly cheaper but very "suspicious" & having my doubts when checking background.

But Viacoin 0.13.2 will come with or without donations & that's a promise. So don't worry if there's a donation or not.
But investing a significant amount of the development funds is counter productive.

Also an optimized wallet & more stable wallet. Yes Windows binaries will be available. I noticed Viacoin current version 0.10.9 doesn't even has Windows binaries.

If you run a wallet, make sure to backup everything and export your private keys. Follow the regular process when you normally update the wallet for a coin you hold.

I have some additional deposits coming in at the end of this week and will make a small donation to the fund. If the top 20 holders each donated .25 BTC we'd be in pretty good shape.

There is always going to be a market for the Trump/Putin/Pot/Kanye/Doge style coins where people invest solely because of P&D nature of them. So be it.
