Nothing will be adopted if doesn't give personal advantage to the users, no matter how good or revolutionary it would be to the society in general.
So it shows that bitcoin has some change of sucess, and not another good thing deemed to failure

I would say that the real reason that most people are interested in Bitcoin is because they are hoping that the price skyrockets and it makes them money.
Obviously there are some libertarians that like the thought of taking the power of money away from the Fed and Gov't, and then there is a smaller number of people that are interested in it's potential for micro-transactions.
At the end of the day, I would say the largest percentage of people are here because they are hoping to hit it big like some of the early adopters that got in in the single digits.

As fiat "crumbles into dust", an increase in BTC/Gold is more desirable than BTC/cash_prices. |

Money is a very strong incentive to get involved with things. If it wasn't for the stories about enormous gains over a relatively small time frame, bitcoin wouldn't have received that much exposure. That's also the reason why those coins that are directly backed by the USD 1:1 are going to fail.
People are hoping to have similar outsized gains in the price of bitcoin when they invest/speculate in bitcoin. The main reason people want to use bitcoin is because it is more cost effective then alternative payment methods. |
