There would just need to be a third party group that would review and/or "rate" the new coin (on what metrics I do not know). It would take reputable members for their opinions to matter. This would be something that new coins that are "reputable" would strive to attain, perhaps certification of some kind.
In the end it would come down to trust that this group would be honest and not sell out. With all things involving money there is little trust to be had.

Guys, what you're doing now will only lead to bitcointalk closing down this sub forum. This is the wild west and that's the way it's supposed to be! If you want regulation, go trade interest rates Looking at the current scenerio of crypto world, scams are more than actual good coins. There is only a fooling machine where new comers are fooled. I'm with kryptopojken on this one. I don't like scams any more than the next guy but I don't think it's a good idea to impose the kind of restrictions you're suggesting. In the end it's up to each and everyone to decide what coins they want to invest in. It's their responsibility. I got burned myself a few times buying up scamcoins but I only got myself to blame for it. I don't blame the scamming devs one bit. I chose to invest. I would have avoided some of those coins if I'd been less lazy and had gone through the ANN thread before buying on Bittrex. I think the best we can do is to try and educate people on how to spot scams.

At best you can prevent noobs from creating new threads. That will not stop the problem as I believe that these scammer devs have many sock puppet accounts with 40+ activity.
if you wait some more time they will have hero puppet aka lol some of them have even registered aka in 2013 all those scam coins are knc and other mega btc farm fault, normal people can't mine btc tnx to them..fuck that centralized bitcoin network

wouldn't that encourage spam? i agree some moderation is needed but at what point do we draw the line Yeah it could... just looking for some bench-marks too. I like the idea of charging a couple hundred bucks to start an ANN though. Anyone or anyone group of 'ninja coders' who believe in their product can afford this. Obviously this won't stop tom-foolery since many unscrupulous fellows will see this as a cost of doing business but I bet it would slow the flood-waters.

Here's a solution: stop dealing with these shitcoins. You can secure your money by stop giving it to scammers. If you take the risk with them and you get scammed in whatever way it's nobody else's fault but your own. Seriously, 99.9% of these coins should just be ignored. Ignore them and they'll go away.

That's the solution to us, or I guess mostly experienced people? What about those newer ones and/or investors? Once they get burned by such a coin, I'm pretty sure that they won't come back.

Sometimes getting burned is the only way they'll learn. There's not much you can do for people who are motivated by greed or the need to get rich quick and those people are always ripe to get scammed. If they wern't getting scammed on here they'd be out buying snake oil in the real world. This forum really can't be held responsible for scammers or the people they con, but the community can help police these shit/scam coins by continually warning them of the dangers, but of course many wont listen and just want to jump on the next big thing regardless and lose their money in the process.

Generally speaking all alt coins are eventually going to fail. Anyone that understands this but chooses to invest anyway deserves to lose their shirt with the alts.

It is not scammers that are bad it is people who trust them, they are hurting themselves. Altcoin sooner or later are gonna fail. If you want to trust someone you either are idiot, mega optimist or you just want to be scammed.

So centralizing the control over which coins can get listed to a small group of senior and hero members, how could that ever go wrong. A scam dev would just have to pay these members on the side to get their coin added. Also there are the implications of giving noobs a false sense of security, that if a coin is listed it must have been through this auditing by 'respected' members so it's not a scam. To the others suggesting that new coins have to pay a fee to list their threads, where would this money go? I suspect it wouldn't be to charity. Whilst I agree that something needs to be done, this is not the right way, as others have said most scam coins aren't even obvious until after launch. Good luck trying to regulate an unregulated market full of participants who hate regualtion though

It would be way easier for them just to ban the altcoin section. I hope they wont do that.
You just have to be very cautious with alt coins. As you note, most of them are not serious.

Most people who have lost money on a scamcoin have been warned multiple times by people who can see past the hype. More often than not, those who are merely doing a good deed by warning potential victims are accused of spreading FUD by the same people that they are trying to protect. And when they do become victims, instead of thanking the people who tried to warn them, they blame the "FUD-ers" for somehow causing the coin to collapse. Scamcoin victims blame everyone but themselves -- that's why they're victims.
If you think a coin is a scam, then just ignore it. Let the get-rich-schemers play among themselves. Without a regulation of cryptocurrencies, the only way to stop scams is to not keep them alive by not continuously pointing people at their direction.

Couldn't agree with you more. Bitcointalk is a bitcoin forum and it should focus on bitcoin only.
