The downside is the system could also be used similarly in a negative way to paint someone in a negative light simply because they have 'differing business interests' for example. A private sale would prevent that. See the Silk Road bitcoin auction as an example. Had those 30,000 seized bitcoins been dumped on an exchange, it probably would have eaten through every single buy order and crashed the price to 0 in an instant.

The trust system does seem to have its uses and I think it has a legit and good purpose.  However I've removed the default trust from my trust list.  You can still go and see all the feedback that has been left, it just doesn't show up in the "rating numbers" that show on profiles.
