Why did you choose this configuration (two cards per board)?

Greez all, just wanted to participate in here before asics take over. So there it is, thrown together back in the days gaining from low diff. Two MSI HD6870 twin frozr II (bios modded with rbe for low mem rate), a Sapphire HD5850, ancient ASRock K8SLI-eSATA2 with Sempron CPU, Linuxcoin usbstick, cgminer, uvnc remote administrated, wlan usbstick. I was a total linux noob but knowlege retrieved from this forum helped me to set up. Thanks guys for assistance, it were valuable hours! Soon sloppy MSI fans died and additional fans were equipped. Hours of testing resulted in maxed out MSIs 970 core and Sapphire 990 core, 370 mem both, stable, giving me around 1 Ghash/s. 100btc mined later, an inquiry from my energy provider and especially a horrific bill forced my to quit. Those were the days but that's ok, because there are mining operations to join in. Forget the old, greet the new!

I can, but when I put everything in an equation, it costed me the same as getting motherboards with 2 cards. So I went for simpler solution Smiley

I just love your cable management system! Cheesy
Although I think it needs more tomato sauce! Wink
Just Kidding!  Grin
Thank you for sharing!

Yeah the cable managment sucks Cheesy. I had the machines in a biger room, and when I move house, they got into a small room, and I was to lazy to cut and patch new cables. No one enters room 7970 Cheesy anyway, these are all Power Color reference boards so its damn loud. As oposed to room 7950 that has same number of 7950 MSI Twin Frozr and Gigabyte Windforce cards, where you can actually talk Cheesy

How can it cost the same?
2 extenders cost around 5$ and I doubt a second MB, CPU, RAM, HDD cost less. Shocked

poor NOOB, you don't need expensive MBs having 4-6 PCIe 16x slots, you can just use the 1x slots you have free on the MBs allready you have. You don't have to use a powerful PSU just bridge two of the once you bought.

And there are simple cheap MBs with 1 PCIe 16x and 6 PCIe 1x slots like ASROCK H61DEL it is made for mining and u can put 6 cards on it.
That is what I do - 3 machines with 18 cards total - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCTDN05LKao

Re-organized my miners for making room for more GPU rigs (yup, still GPU mining) as well as proper electrical sockets. Click pictures for bigger version.

Electrical box before.. No faceplate, 16awg wiring, plugs into a 3 prong dryer socket. 250 volts and 30 amps.

Electrical box after. Faceplates, duplex sockets, internally wired with 10awg wiring. Much thicker and safer.

And the miners themselves. Before (Was posted in this thread once already)

And after with metal racks. Easier to remove graphics cards, lower profile.

Look bro, I own a computer shop and service since '98, so no need calling me a noob, trust me I know prices. And considering my RMA over years, I know the risk of using bad PSUs. At the time when I was buying these, I considered everything there is available, abd for me, this was the best solution. Maybe I am just lucky but I never had a thing stop on me for a year now, and I have a total of almost 100 graphics cards. There is also a thing, thats called "ease of sale" when all stops at one time, and I took that into a consideration. Also I didnt have to "invent" any type of a custom rig or cooling, I made it as simple as possible, inserted 2 cards per motherboard and thats all.

What I am saying, everyone has his own ways, someone likes to link small power supplys, someone likes to make a custom housing, etc... I went for what I think is the best for my money, and never ran into a single problem besides having to change cables for electricity to my house Cheesy

BTW I just looked, at the time i bought these, the prices were the following. A bunch of 40gb hdds for 4 euro a piece. 2gb ddr3 memory sticks 7 euro a piece. Motherboards at 37 euro. Cpus at 29. And the PSUs were mixed. 850w XFX were bought with the idea of adding the third card at some time, those were 70 euro, and for other rigs it was Thermaltake 550w, i dont remember the price, but was cheap at like 45 euro. At these prices, it was not worth experimenting since the cards were 360 euro a piece, so the mobo+mem+cpu+hdd+psu was like 15% of the price of each rig, and at that rate it wasnt worth the fuss of making a custom solution.

Everything you sad sounds reasonable but at the end:

For the same amount of GH/s - my setups probably cost 2/3-rd of yours take 1/2 the space use less electricity, I've had very few problems, less rigs means less time setting them up lets say when power fails, btw I use Wi-Fi with 3G so no spaghetti on the floor, and the internet never stops. Cheesy

I can give you that my MB-s will be harder to sell, but only them. Everything else (besides VGAs) is similar to yours just 3 times less! WoW when I sad 3 times less I realized, u r a idiot Cheesy Cheesy

Only thing why I am an idiot is because I sold like 80% of bitcoins when it reached 19 USD... Would have made a nice difference with 23 today Smiley, but thats life, you win some, you lose some. Waiting for asics to hit, and to sell everything, was nice while it lasted. Will post the rest of the pictures tomorrow

Please I don't mean to insult you, that's why I put the  Cheesy Cheesy at the end.
I just think that your setup is wasteful, and there is no way I can agree that 2 is better than 6 Wink

But you ain't an idiot for selling at 19$ I've sold for 5-6$ a year ago, so I guess I'm the biggest looser.

And yeah the ASIC problem. One thing that I hate about it is although I knew they weren't going to do produce anything at least till January, ASIC fear stopped me from buying more GPUs and I would have made a killing if I had bought more by now.

Yeah I sold in the 5s too.  Stupidly got rid of most of my 5870s too thinking October was going to be it.   Now trying to scrounge up enough for some ASIC.
