This is really very good news for Bitcoin community.
Wikipedia finally recognize Bitcoin as great way to raise more money for their work.
I hope others will follow soon.

it's good they accept bitcoin and all

but it's bad they're probably selling it

so we have 140 000$ of bitcoins dumped on an exchange in 7 days from Wikipedia

I somehow missed the news that Wikipedia now accepts bitcoin donations.

It's hidden in there in "other ways to donate" and apparently they got 140k (in dollars) worth of BTC just on the first week they started accepting it.

Can you provide a link to that stat about how much they received.  140K in USD is not insignificant.

Cool, thanks.  11K isn't quite 140K but it's still not insignificant.

This is great news obviously and step in good direction. But one thing is bothering me. Option for BTC donation should be visible and  not hidden in some 'others method to donate' menu or something. Make it big, let people see BTC symbol.

No, you posted a link to a google search with a smart-ass animation from 2009 which was perhaps cute the first time anyone saw it 5 years ago.  It's not my job to google everything that someone posts on the bitcoin forum without evidence.  If I say to the OP, "hey where do you see that? can you post a link?" then some smart ass "derp, why don't you google" is an unhelpful reply and that's why i'm calling you out for it.  Obviously I can google anything I please but that doesn't meant that I'm going to turn up the same sources that the OP found.  In fact, Wales' twitter sems to suggest the OP was off by an order of magnitude.  Because I don't click on your asshole lmgtfy link, I have no idea what you found.  If you want to try again more helpfully, that's be cool.  Otherwise you might find this helpful:

Is it so hard for them to put a single bitcoin address to the bottom of their homapage  Huh

It would be a big win-win for both wikipedia and bitcoin.

This is an accounting issue. They can't speculate themselves, because of the structure of the wikimedia foundation. So they need to sell for USD immediately. Same with stocks.

you asked for a source, and i gave you one... then you didn't click on it and get angry. all of this could have been avoided if you had searched google. that's all i have to say about that.

I didn't say that i have a problem with them selling bitcoins for USD. I would just like the bitcoin option to be more visible.

Sure, that would be awesome, but it is not possible,

Another issue someone from wikipedia gave was that each donation is taxdeductible and they need to be able to point each donation to a certain person. Also not more than X % can be donated anonymously before becoming an issue.

Yes, I asked about a source, and you didn't give me one, you gave me a smart-ass suggestion to search google.  And no, it wouldn't have been avoided if I had searched google, as my question was:

"OP, what was your original source?"

(Which is still unknown, BTW) Not:

"OP, what is on google about this topic?"

And guess what, you just made my ignore list.  Cheers!

I honestly don't know why they don't make it more public. They've been on edge with accepting bitcoin for a while now, too. Seems weird for such an open organization. Glad they finally have it on board though, I hope they make it one of the main options.
