I’m gonna invent a combustible lemon!!!

I'm thinking about building a mining rig in the basement.  Cool air downstairs and the hot air will rise up the stair case to an open air window area.

I'm thinking about using 2 X GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130610 , since I can't find any radeon 5970 or 6970's for sale on newegg.  I'll throw them in a box with a good power supply and some sort of motherboard with SLI support, though I'm not even sure I'd need to link them SLI style would I?

It has OpenGL and CUDA, which from what I gather are the important things here.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

better get some 5870/5850 if you can't get the 5970/6990,
they are not only cheaper than the GTX,
they also need less power AND are three times as fast.

So maybe this other one then?  ASUS has an ATI 6870 that is cheaper that I could get instead.

the sapphire 5850 extreme seems to be the best mining card for a budget build right now.. Mine runs at 320MHash/s with a very mild overclock, could easily run at 350 if I wanted to run the fan at higher speeds. I don't think it can be beat at less than $150!

If you can't find any 5850/5870/5970/6990, then look for a 6950 and then unlock the shaders. It is cheaper than a 6970 and gets almost as much performance.

Yep, unlocked 6950 is the way I'm going. Well, as soon as I have enough USD to spare. Smiley

Well it looks like the 5850's can get up to 300 Mh/s if done right.  At $140 apiece that is really approachable to run two of them in one system.

Just clicking around on newegg I can build a full box with two of those, a mediocre mobo/cpu and a 850 watt powersupply for about $630

Choose the 6970 over the 6950 if you don't have a dedicated rig and use that rig for any gaming.  I mothballed my 570GTX (OC) for a stock 6970 just for the purposes of mining and I am getting 366MH/s as opposed to 133MH/s.  I actually like NVidia better otherwise; the hardware and drivers [especially the latter] seems far more stable to me.

One other thing; future driver or BIOS updates may possibly get further performance from the 6970 (new cards always seem to have less than optimal drivers/BIOS running them).

I get 400 Mh/s out of my 5850, and it's silent + never above 70C. So if you do it right it's quite nice for a 120$ card :3

Sweet.  This sounds like a great little project for the summer.

Another emphasis is stability.

My intent is to start this up in the basement, babysit the rigs for a couple weeks, and then hike the length of the Appalachian Trail while my busy little miners chug away.  Hopefully when I come back the miners will have made a nice little pile of bitcoins.

A late northbound actually.  I am trying to avoid the humongous (50 hikers a night at some shelters) bolus the AT had at around April 15th this year.

And thanks for the tips on the blackflies Smiley.  I have some mosquito netting for my head that will hopefully help with that....other parts of my body may need long sleeves and pants to cover the tender bits.

OpenCL

Big difference in the two.

And I move pretty fast.  I think I can make it in under 4 months.  5 months should be pretty easy.  <knock on wood>
