Thank you for the list. Do you know if there is also some environmental group ( legit, honest and possibly no catastrophic ) which accepts Bitcoin as donation option?

Here's a new one for your list. Long-time 501(c)(3) supporting amateur radio and scientific expeditions, as well as a scholarship fund. Just started accepting bitcoins a few weeks ago. Northern California DX Foundation : 94-2853576 : Cupertino, CA : ncdxf.org ( http://ncdxf.org) Thanks! Tim

Thanks for the suggestion, Tim. It may seem like a small technicality, but you see that this organization is a Private Operating Foundation (POF), instead of a Public Charity (PC) -- and thus falls outside the limitation of this list.

Aha. Sorry, I didn't catch that nuance in the scope of the list. Maybe if I can find the time, I could start similar lists for POFs, churches, and other similar organizations. Just need bitcoin to go up a bit more so I can quit the day job. :-) Keep up the good work here!

Sounds like a GREAT idea to me! Really! I know others, too, that would like to see similar lists for other kinds of groups. I have to believe these are only a help to our community.

WOW, thank you for posting this... do we have any global lists of companies or storefronts that accept Bitcoin? I'm interested in promoting this as well.

Hi, what about NGOs outside the US? As far as I know only US charities get approved by the 501(c)(3)....

Hi, what about NGOs outside the US? As far as I know only US charities get approved by the 501(c)(3)....
501(c)(3) is a U.S. tax provision for U.S. charities, for the benefit of U.S. taxpayers. Some send part or all of their income (donations) to support foreign entities; most do not.

Who is doing the vetting? How do we know we can trust you with this... ? Can you give us a short explanation on how the vetting is done and verified? It would be sad if we donated to some of these charities and later find out that the vetting was not done properly and that the donations was going to someone else s pockets. If done properly, I would thank you in advance for a job well done. Charities are close to my heart...

There has been no vetting of the charities on this list, except for that which the IRS does to give and renew their 501(c)(3) status. This is simply a listing of all the organizations that meet the two criteria mentioned above. Some of the organizations do refer to their standing with respected third-party reviewing groups; but every donor must do his/her own due diligence in selecting where to donate.

I'm surprised that American Red Cross isn't the list. However, i don't found any statement from their website even though many news media have shared about it long time ago. Forgive me if i gave wrong information. Yes, when I first set up this resource, BitPay was signing up a lot of charities - large and small - and the larger ones got a lot of press fanfare. But several of those charities never really embraced bitcoin enough to facilitate donations through their web sites, and hence don't meet the criteria for the listing here. The American Red Cross was one such charity.
