There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

So I recently set up my new Antminer S5 to start solo mining here. I don't have this connected to my PC as it's at my shop. My question is how do I know if it's found a block so   I know not to unplug it or something... I've been mining for only a couple weeks at Slushpool so I'm still learning lol.

1. You will notice the additional 12.5 +. BTC on your wallet.
2. Check the FoundBlocks at the miner status page.

$480 a day is an awful expensive lottery buy-in.  Undecided

If you have to ask "why?", you wouldn`t understand my answer.

my first block here was early last year.... when I was cleaning my 5 x S7s and before putting them on kano pool; i decided to put them on solo overnight. The next morning I was about to make the pool changes then I was interrupted by the Fedex man ringing the doorbell. After getting my package... went to my desktop... and I see 25 BTC pending in my wallet.. WTF!!!

If I provided you good and useful info or just a smile to your day, consider sending me merit points to further validate this Bitcointalk account ~ useful for future account recovery...

Anyone have recent stats of people mining here?

Took the dive recently on some S9s.  Two purchases 1 , then 2 more.  And low-and-behold hit a block on the 1st S9 last week after having it plugged in for ~10 days!!!  Kicking myself because I was going back and forth on solo-mining while building a box for the 3 units.  Ended up mining on slush...  MONGOLIANS!!!!

For the long-time miners here, what are the odds of hitting blocks solo-mining since the halving???

Block # 456099 & 515126 @ Slush
25 - S9     8 - D3     16 - L3+
9 - 8x 1070     6 - 8x 1060     7 - 8x RX580     1 - 7x RX480     1 - 6x RX470

It obviously depends on your hashrate and the difficulty at the time of mining:
www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator/

Obviously it can vary greatly as it is a random process, but this will show you the odds and the odds are against you unless you have a huge hashrate. If you are willing to gamble, then you may aswell play red/black in a casino where the house only has a 2.7% advantage over the player (european version).

Well the pool hasn't solved any blocks of late so just for some interest here's poolbench which is showing block speed changes to a client in USA (slow to load):
https://poolbench.antminer.link/
Note solo pool being the fastest of the full verifying node pools, and that de is actually faster on change than main solo since the server upgrade. All the ones above it mine empty unverified blocks.

Now all we need is a few blocks sprinkled around to make the most of that rapid block propagation/change...

Put your hashrate or ck address in http://solochance.com for odds.
