Tonight,  a friend asked for a donation via chipin:
http://sendwoltoporcfest.chipin.com/send-wol-to-porcfest

It occurred to me that the Bitcoin world would love a similar widget to this:

But using bitcoins.

Does anyone have any idea how hard it would be to program something like that?
It would monitor the block chain for the number of donations sent to a particular address,  and automatically convert the amount into a chart for the equivalent number of USD based on the exchange rate.

This is just a thought,  but one that I think the Bitcoin world would like to see.

I already contacted easywallet.org and blockchain.info mentioning that this service would be a nice addition to their sites.

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

This should be really easy to programm, in almost any language.

I like the idea Smiley

Incidentally, just for displaying the total amount received, or just the balance of an account, there is:

Make that $20 with this new information. Wink

If we are going to do it,  I would like to do it right.

I just registered the domain name www.bitcoinchipin.com

The landing page will have instructions for how it works.

The user will input:

1. Their target amount in BTC or USD
2. The Bitcoin address to be used
3. The title for the chipin

The user can click "submit" and be provided with the HTML code
that they can copy and paste wherever they want to display the chipin.

The output will display:

1. Title of the chipin
2. Amount received  in USD or BTC
3. Target amount in USD or BTC
4. A graph showing the percentage amount currently reached towards the goal.
5. The Bitcoin payment address
6. A link to learn more about Bitcoins  www.weusecoins.org
7. Anything else I am forgetting.

The service will need to be professionally hosted,  and reliable if we expect people to use it.
I'm willing to pay for the domain name and hosting, but I will need help with everything else.

Please let me know if you would like to revise your quote.

$20 is fine, bitcoin needs tidbits like this so i dont mind going low. I can start next week(would love to start today, but in the middle of some abscess tooth pain atm getting that fixed soon).

I actually have some webdesigns in psd format that have been collectig dust for a few weeks now made by me but they look like cookie cutter quality stuff. So i might need a webdesigner. Ill post up screen shots of my "dusty" designs in a little bit here.

Sounds great.

Is there any particular type of hosting I need, or a particular hosting company you recommend?
Ideally I will pay with Bitcoins.

Hi,

I am the creator of online-tipjar.com and I am revamping the site, and adding new features. I may do something in a format of chipin.

It actually would be pretty easy as Blockexplorer.com can do:

http://blockexplorer.com/q/getreceivedbyaddress/1PutAddressHere

It outputs a total number for all tx's going to the address. So if you need a tip account just create a new Bitcoin address and the rest can be done using php or whatever to create a nice little chart using that number and your goal etc.

I use and recommend rackspace, ive had some bad experiences as far as hosting providers that accept bitcoins. Maybe someone could chime in with some true testimonials of legit btc hosting providers.

As long as it doesn't get skewed if someone withdraws from the address then that's fine.

I was thinking about doing something like for charity (example: http://www.justgiving.com/project/1777384)

I've been assigned to look for a graphics designer for this bitcoinchipin project. If you are a graphics designer or know someone who is, please PM me so we can chat. I'm looking for one page and a flash widget file. Thanks.

Online-Tipjar.com received an overhaul, and it is now called Propster.  It incorporates features that were asked on this forum, particularly anonymous bitcoin donations without having to register on the site.

The difference between that website and bitcoinchip one is that this website doesn't need to be trusted with bitcoins -- with bitcoin chipin you type in your owned address and the funding organization is responsible for their own funds. For those that don't care about trust i guess it doesn't really matter.

So, it's been almost a year and the site, while it looks pretty, does not seem to contain any method of creating a widget.  The login page is blank.

Considering Chipin.com is now shutting down, it sure would be nice if this site was working!   Cool

Any good news?  Are there any other sites doing this with bitcoin?

I made the first working version that used a local bitcoin database to search bitcoin addresses and then they would be instantly be refersed in an efficient manner, however the designers skills I picked at the time were not what I had been shown as far as quality went and the chipin owner decided he liked the widgets "interworkings" but not the design. I'd be happy to remake the site again if I can get a great designer to assist and we can team up and release it for once, if the chipin owner is willing to have me integrate my developer work with the "designs" his awesome designer made I wouldn't say no either.
