I also pledge 10 bitcoins. I think it would be great to make the EFF aware of Bitcoin, because it seems like exactly the kind of project that they would understand and support. In the (sadly) likely event of future legal issues involving the status of bitcoins, it would be good if the major players in the world of electronic freedom and free software had previous knowledge and understood the project's goals.

I actually talked about Bitcoin with the EFF chairman a few days ago, he said it sounds cool and forwarded the link to some other EFF people. Smiley

This is a great idea. Not only does it raise interest within the EFF ranks, but it also has the ability to bring more attention to Bitcoin if EFF does happen to really enjoy the idea.

I'll pledge 50 BTC if EFF mentions Bitcoin in public. Whether it be their website, twitter, donation button...whatever.

I'm liking how this is going, and I've been meaning to donate to EFF for awhile, so I'll put some more skin in the game. I am going to match both noagendamarket's and dejayl's pledges and conditions - so that is another 140 bitcoins pledged from me. Same conditions as their donations - 50 if they setup a node, an additional 90 if they add a 'donate bitcoins' button somewhere on their website.

As I'm trying to start an escrow service anyway, I'll volunteer my services if they're needed, although it would be even sweeter if they accepted bitcoins on their website.

The longer this thread goes on, the more stale the pledges are going to be as people forget or leave the community.

I propose someone swiftly volunteer to be the escrow, and get people to donate their pledge. If people don't trust the escrow in question, please speak up.

10 acknowledgement from other users will make the volunteer the official EFF escrow person.

I'll kick in 10 BTC for this worthy cause, although I'd like to know that it is a BTC address that is under the control of the EFF and not somebody else.

The trick is to contact the EFF and have them acknowledge the project in some semi-official capacity at least so far as having an address which can receive the coins.  That effort has been happening already so far as drafting a letter to them, and it will be interesting to see their reaction in terms of donations.  600 BTC is worth enough that they can at least kick the exchanges into high gear if they wish to "spend" it right away.

We could write that X Bitcoins are currently in escrow, and that several more Bitcoiners would like to donate directly. What better incentive for the EFF to create their own account and learn about us?

(No, I didn't just volunteer to be the escrow!)

Three people aye Kiba for escrow. Seven more to go. If EFF set up a node before the aye is done, than there are no need for an escrow.

However, I would still like some more pledges. I know it's not all of you, yet.

I vote that kiba is the escrow.I have one suggestion though, set up a mybitcoin account and give the username and password to the EFF which would mean they don't have to actually set up a client if they dont want too. There may be some reason they can't set up a node however a mybitcoin account gives them an easy option to participate in the bitcoin economy.

Fine with me. There are 15 people who pledged (based on the opening post), but only 6 have said something so far with regards to an escrow. Could they respond?

Yes. And I'll need escrow address soon. I'll be on vacation for a couple of weeks starting Wednesday.

Take my donation now, or wait until I'm back from vacation.
