U.S. threatened Yahoo with big fines for not divulging user data

"The federal government once threatened to fine Yahoo $250,000 a day for not complying with a national security-related request to hand over user data, the company said Thursday.

The announcement comes as part of a larger revelation: Some 1,500 pages of documents related to Yahoo's 2007-08 case challenging U.S. surveillance law are being released, the company's general counsel, Ron Bell, said on Tumblr.

Cases in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which reviews government requests to spy on individuals, are classified.

"The released documents underscore how we had to fight every step of the way to challenge the U.S. government’s surveillance efforts," Bell said.

Yahoo said it was working to make the documents available online."

Since Snowden publicly released exactly what the NSA has been doing, several companies have fought requests by the government for increasing amounts of personal information about US citizens. I would not at all be surprised if this would be a hot topic for the next couple of election cycles.

This is really troubling to think of the feds trying to make companies all over the world hand over private information of their customers.  It's been going on for a while I have no doubt.  If you consider how hostile this move is, you'd be able to see how this will be good for conducting business with these companies in the future.

 Companies have left due to high taxes now you add this in the mix and the future looks a bit bleak in my opinion.  Feds seem to be cutting ties and burning bridges and nobody seems to want to take this issue head on.  It makes me wonder how much I trust my information with those the companies that are cooperating with the feds and aren't being attacked with these same legal tactics.

Once it was a good place to migrate to? What time period was this? When there was forced immigration from Africa by ship transport?
