Hi,

I printed a paper wallet from coinbase and loaded it with 15btc. i tried importing the wallet back to coinbase using my webcam to scan the private key and it says "Wrong key! You scanned a QR code that isn't a bitcoin address. Please try again"

I also tried trying in the private key manually and it says "Hm, that doesnt appear to be the proper format. Please check for typos"

i double checked the private key for errors before typing it manually.

I am confused, cant seem to figure out what happened.

i tried chatting with coinbase support, but they wont respond.

I just tried it with blockchain online wallet and it says unknown key format.
also i scanned the private key QR code and pasted it, same error.

could coinbase have fraudulently generated a fake private key?

could coinbase have fraudulently generated a fake private key?

It's possible.

If the private key isn't correct then its more likely that it is a bug in their program and not fraud, but it isn't impossible for it to be fraud.

I haven't ever looked at a Coinbase paper wallet, so I'm not sure what their layout looks like. It seems even more likely that you've misunderstood the layout and you are scanning and entering something other than a private key (perhaps you are scanning or entering the bitcoin address accidentally).

there are two QR codes, once the wallet pubic key is scanned, coinbase will reply by saying "You scanned a Public key, Please scan the private key"

Also this is the 17th paper wallet based transaction i am conducting with coinbase and this is the first one that seems fraudulent. cant believe would generate a non-functional private key!!

You said you tried typing it in manually?  I believe that Coinbase uses compressed keys and WIF.  Therefore the private key should start with either a 'K' or a 'L' and be 52 characters long.  Does that sound like the private key that you typed?

-snip-
Yea it starts with 'L' and its 52 characters.

Id try it with a local wallet like bitcoin core or electrum. Maybe the private key is correct but the software importing it is faulty.

Edit: I need to improve my reading skills, see comment by Danny below.

Hello Mate,

Use Coinbase Online Wallet for storing Bitcoins or offline Bitcoins wallet .

According to me,  paper wallet is not much better to use .
