Firstly, let us have things explained to us by Roger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWFemmRkRzw

So, this is it: http://www.bitcoinbountyhunter.com/

A site, dedicated to gathering funds which will be anonymously handed to those who catch thieves.

Ok, these are the facts. What are your expectations? Implications of this? Please discuss!!

I can see why they would want to do this and I see their reason behind it however I really do not see it taking off. Something tells me that no matter what is offered there may be nobody who truly knows who the hackers are so this could lead to all kinds of problems.

There are problems for sure anytime the identity of a criminal is unknown. But theoretically it is not impossible to provide convincing evidence on the identity and criminal involvement.

But there are also some significant thefts where the identity of the criminal is likely known. These cases could see renewed efforts to bring justice with bounties as incentive.

You have any better ideas on how to get these scumbags, seeing as law enforcement is usually unmotivated and of little help?

I think the problem with law enforcement is that they have so little evidence to go on in investigating these types of crimes. These kind of hackers usually have very sophisticated methods of hiding their identity. If there is a bounty on the conviction of a specific attacker then people with ways to uncover these sophisticated tricks will have an incentive to do so.

I think the standard for paying out should be lower however. Getting a conviction is a very high bar to reach, especially when the decision to even press charges is done by a DA who may not be convinced of the evidence despite a hacker's identity being revealed.

Color me confused.

Hey guys, to keep track of bounties on this board, I made an IFTTT recipe and linked it to a wordpress blog. If you're interested in checking it out, here's the link.

https://bitcoinbountyhunter.wordpress.com/

Let me know what you guys think!

(I will try to limit it to only new topics in the future to avoid reply overload, but I'll have to do more research into how exactly to do that)

Not sure how it will work, but I like the idea.  I'll need to spend more time looking into the process but I like the idea in general.  Especially it if it helps the police in anyway solve crimes and catch scammers.

Ver has it setup so that in order to collect on a bounty, a person needs to give information that leads to the conviction of a scammer. If there is no conviction then there is no bounty paid. If the DA declines to press charges (for any reason) then there is no bounty paid.

I'm surprised that only 3 bounties are on the site. Seems like people are being scammed and robbed daily. Check out the securities section here on bitcointalk.

I guess we will find out who means business and who is just blowing smoke. Bounties make accusers have to put their money where their mouth is.

bitcoinica collapsed because they had their reserves in mtgox.

so 4btc can be easily earned by proving karpeles stole the funds..

karpeles wont release information such as IP address logs or usernames used to raid the mtgox accounts to the public to investigate, because it wont take long to realise,,,, it was him

i find it very funny after 2 years since bitcoinica, 7 months of mtgox and karpeles is not doing anything personally to look into the thieves. infact other people had to come to him personally in japan and be given limited access to the accounts, and there has not been much in confirmation that karpeles did not do it.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

If you are an inexperienced hacker or script kiddie and your location can be found, you could identify them by using device Mac Address identification tracking.

With simple programs, most information can be retrieved from harddrives, even after it was formatted.

Best thing is to give them rope, to hang themselves. {Put out the bait and they will come, then just follow the bread crumbs, back to it's source}

If you get paid to do it, it's so much sweeter...........

Only after you have been hacked and you lost a lot of valueble time and information, you would see the value in this.  Angry

I like the idea initially. Having been there looking at the site, it is merely a bounty posting site? like a noticeboard! The post is going to sit there and the site is not going to do anything. Suppose a scammer is found, what can be done? Reverse a transaction? Call local law enforcement or find local gangsters to make him pay? Cheesy

This is the type of solution that Bitcoin needs to gain some momentum. Localized governments do not have the reach necessary to protect the network. If Roger's solution begins to work, a hacker/thief will think twice before trying to do harm to another person.
