We still don't know right now. Bitcoin might be another US govt project.

I would be so proud if my government were capable enough to have made bitcoin. But I don't think they are.
For those worried about a sinister government plot, remember that bitcoin is open source. If the code were able to do something other than what it claims then we would see it in the code.
