Over the past year, it’s become a lot easier to buy bitcoin, thanks to services such as Coinbase. And thanks to retailers such as Overstock.com and TigerDirect, it’s now a lot easier to to spend them online. But there’s still one big pothole in bitcoin’s bumpy road to mainstream adoption: Your local coffee shop.

This is big. There are a lot of small town coffee shops and bookstores that use Square on an iPad.

Any significantly advanced cryptocurrency is indistinguishable from Ponzi Tulips.

at 2.75% this will never compete with bitcoin. Adapt or die.

It's called putting a foot in the door. This Square point-of-sale device will be the first many people will even hear about Bitcoin. They can later decide to switch to Bitpay, Coinbase, or entirely to Bitcoin.

The bitcoin payment is accepted more merchants. It was wise decision for Square to integrate with bitcoin in the Register. It will make merchants accept bitcoin payment a lot of easier. The more merchants accept bitcoin payment, the more customers will be aware that they can pay by bitcoin and tend to pay by it in the future.

Yeah, anything that give access or the option to pay for something with your btc is huge news.

Maybe this will cause other services to compete. I'm glad to have any service that pushes adoption, though problems with high fees can come later and hopefully the market will cause the providers to lower them.
